Finally Took the Camera Along

Great pics Brian. Looks like a young Indiana Jones in the making you got there. Raising him right, getting him started enjoying the outdoors.

Great pictures of a Father & his Son enjoying nature together.
Thanks for sharing!

Good pics 'Ol Bud, I like the small leather pouch you got there & your son looks like he was loving it ! Thanks for sharing !

Brian, awesome outing with the boy. Looks like time well spent. I wish my father had been more apt to wanna hang out with me. He was pretty distant growing up, and wasnt a very outgoing man. The war did its toll on him, and his father was not a good man.

I am trying to change that with my boys, and its great to see that a father does mean something. The glow on yor sons face speaks volumes.

Hows the FB treatin ya?

Man, you sold me on the 40oz klean kanteen/cup/maxpetion bottle holder setup. I have a couple 27oz ones, but that 40 with the flat top, and cup looks like a great combo.

I also saw a 10/22 in pink the other day that made me think of you. I think Im gonna pick one up for my wife for christmas.

WOW that was a great post and pics Brian.
The knives you took look great and so did the
pack with the axe. LOL I was using my smaller
one today while sitting with the family around the
evening campfire tonight. that axe is just so
awsome. Thanks again LOL

Yeah I love my pair of 27oz Klean Kanteens. I nevergot the 40, cause its hard to determine size from pics, but Brians pics really gave me a good perspective on its size. I did not know my cup would fit around it either. I see myself ordering that exact setup soon.

Nothing like a nice hike in the fall when the leaves have changed. That is something that I have really missed since moving to the west coast.

I like it quite a bit. It gets a lot of daily belt time, mainly because the Jeff H kydex is so awesome, and so low profile that you forget it is there, and nobody else can see it ;)

Yeah, the 40ozer works out pretty well. It is basically the same diameter as a nalgene, but gets its extra ounces with a little extra head room. So, the GSI cup fits in the bottle holder fine, the kleen fits in the GSI fine, and it all works well together.

beautiful woods! love the leather pouch.

Nice to see kids in the woods with knives and an Elder. +1

Great pics - thanks for sharing them. Looks like had a great time. As others have said, it's great to see you getting out there with your lad.

Great pics, looks like you guys had fun. Your son looks like quite the adventurer!

The 7th picture of your first post should be printed and framed, along with the 3rd picture of your second post!!! Great photos!

When I think about how crazy life is and how bad things can be. When I look at the news and wonder how people do the things they do to their kids. When I think of just how rough life is trying to make a living. I see pics like these and remember the camping trips my father took me on. I remember all the little things he tried to teach me. I remember all the time he spent even though he had very little time off work.
Thanks Brian! You made me look at things in a whole new light this morning.
I hope your son, when he is 44 years old, will give you a call to just say thanks. I will give my dad that call today:thumbup::D

Great pics once again Brian. Gotta love the hat on your boy, I've said it before, he's the perfect poster boy for loving the outdoors. Some of those pics should be enlarged and printed, especially the ones of the two of you and your son on the dock, they are special.

Hey briang,

Really nice pictures. Really captured the essence of fall in our neck of the woods.

I guess when your son laid claim to the Bark River, that also included one of your hats? :D

Very dapper:thumbup::)

Thanks for posting, lots of fresh air puts'em right to sleep, sometimes even before you get out of the parking lot

Man even your boy takes great pictures.

Thanks for sharing your outings, it just makes me want to get out with my daughter even more.

It is a bark river classic lite hunter. Great little knife. He "claimed" that one quite some time ago.

If you don't mind me asking what age did your son start using a knife. I bought a Buse Bear Cub for my daughter and I'm not sure when or how to start teaching her about knives. An input and advice would be appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking what age did your son start using a knife.

He just turned 6 in September. I would have to say that it was right around 5 when we first started using one together. That seems crazy young, but for some reason he was like a magnet to them.....wonder why ;)

I figured it was best expose him to them, rather than be a big mystery. If it is a mystery, I am sure he would want to seek it out on his own. Now that it is no big deal, it is not like he is wanting to "play" with one, or go behind my back to get one.

Anyway, I started doing it in stages. We started using one only together. I taught him all the rules, and the things he had to do to be safe. Then, I started watching him using it, while I was very close by. Then, I started letting him carry it by himself. That made me really nervous. The rule still stayed that I had to be around for him to use it. I kid you not, he will wear his knife all day long. That made me nervous too, because I was just waiting for him to think he could get away with something while I was not around. So far, I have not had a single issue, so it has worked out well. I think it because he knows how serious I am about the knife rules.

I would not say that I am super strict with my kids, but I make them behave. If my kids behaved the way a lot of others I see, I don't see how we could do all the "fun stuff" that we get to do. Its a hard line to walk.

I think a lot depends on the kid too. Heck, I know some adults that I wouldn't want to be around while they were using a knife! :D If I felt uncomfortable with his behavior at all, I would take more time with the "using it together" steps.

I wish you luck with your kids. It can be scary at times.

Here he is with the rest of his knife collection:

Thanks for the advice and shareing your expereinces. I figured maturity played a big part in deciding when to start but I never thought about not making it a mystery. I think my daughter will get an early start. She is only 19 mths but is already trying to pick my pockets to get to my Griptilian. I'm amazed at how quickly they grow up. Seems like yesterday that we brought her home forn the hospital and already she has lost the baby look and is already starting to look like a child. Fatherhood has been a blast so far. I'm looking forward to the future with joy and a little concern.
