Find of the day

If you ever come across a good old tool at a good price, it would be wise to seize the opportunity. It can sit in the corner until you are ready for it. :) Otherwise the day will come when you wish you had one, and can't find one anywhere at a decent price.
Oh I plan on going back to this store again soon. I didn't have time to really look all over.

Some axes were also in pretty poor shape. And more of a project than I'd have time for. These will be a good start for me though

yep, you have some good axes to work with.
of course be on the look-out for future projects, if it looks interesting grab it.
i have a hatchet head with a round eye, no idea what it was used for, but i figured what the heck, maybe it will be something someday.

The unico eye is about 2 1/4 long and the other is about 1 3/4 from a quick eyeballing. I hammered the fawns foot while holding the axe bit side down and tightened it up quite a bit. Got almost 1/8" of handle out the top now

There seems to be quite a bit of rust on the surface on the unico when I checked it the other day. I think I will do the vinegar trick to remove the rust. I think I'm going to try to keep the haft on the other bit now that it is more secured but will buy a new one for both. I'm thinking I'm going to file off any mushrooming that are on the poll too.

I've been using the Metal Rescue product for rust removal of late. Works quite well for me.

One day soak in vinegar, no scrubbing

Jimmy, sharpening usually is a good time to even out the cutting edge.

How are you planning to sharpen it?

I'll be using a bastard file, trying to stick with the angle the bit has now. Once is fairly sharp I'll switch to a stone. I just didn't know if rounding out the edge would help or just be a waste of time. I'm new to sharpening axes... Well, more than getting it sharper than a maul [emoji6] . I've sharpened knives all my life so the general steps and process I'm used to, but I've never made a knife or refurbished one like these axes.

The edge isn't smooth, should I take care of that before sharpening?

Do you mean smooth with the file perpendicular to the edge like this?

Before I sharpened axes I sharpened plane irons, chisels, etc. If the edges were nicked then I jointed the edge first. If you don;t you will get tracks in the stock from the blade. So, when I got some axes, I just followed the same procedure. From some posters on this forum I found out that not everyone worries about a nick or two on their edges. And further sharpenings will eventually take out the nicks. I think the advantage of this is it saves time and metal.

Yes, this is what I was referring to, thank you. Since this a restoration head I don't mind extra steps, just curious if it's going to be worth it or if, like you said, it will remove remove too much material

I generally try to even out any bit waviness as I sharpen it with a file...a few extra strokes in the high spots usually evens it out pretty well without a lot of extra effort.

Here's the unnamed head

Took a couple short chops on a tree, about 1/4 swing or less. Bites in ok but handle is a little too far gone. At least since I'm getting a new handle for the unico anyways
