My titles suck more each time I post !!!

Anyways today the weather was a mix of snow showers and sunshine so I had to get out there !!!

Maisy hurt her leg yesterday but today she was back to her crazy self....

What a perfect day eh !!!

Came upon many tracks today, here are some squirrel....

Rabbit....

Deer.....

Now these have me stumped, they are average dog size but they are not dog, I don't know if you can tell from the pic but when I was there I could just tell they weren't from a dog. I followed them and they just went into thick bush, whenever there was a fallen tree blocking the way , the animal always went underneath, my dog and most other dogs however just jump over. They were also quite round and un-defined as if the underfoot were covered in fur ?

I came upon some sites that would provide good natural shelter with little extra work....

Cont'd
After reading a recent post about cutting down small tree's with a medium knife I decided to have a go using my DM and a batton, let me first say I am against cutting down trees just for the sake of it but sometimes we have to try these things so we know for future reference !
FrancisKing057.jpg

Things were going quite well with little effort....
FrancisKing060.jpg

Now here is my mistake, I should have taken away some from the under-side before starting on the top as there was a crack and this happened....

Back on the trail....

These would make a tasty snack if only Maisy wasn't so busy sniffing over in the other direction !!!
FrancisKing033.jpg

Yeah no good stopping sniffing now they are long gone !!!

Very Nice pictures! Spooky, I agree entirely! A truely breathtaking picture!

Pit,

As always excellet pics. I think the myster tracks belong to a member of the weasel family Possibly a marten or a fisher... THe way they are positioned next to each other suggests to me that the animal bounds or "hops" like a weasel as opposed to walking like a dog or coyote.

Good point bro, I think you are right there. They did look a little large for any of that family but I know from past experience that tracks can beome distorted and larger when in snow or wet sand !!!

the only members of the weasel family in my nevk of the woods are the garden variety longtailed weasel, the skunk and the river otter..(some martens way up north) out west in your neck of the woods I think thier are fishers which I think can get pretty big...are there wolverines over there??

Pit i love that pic with the sun shows between the trees.. Do you ever print the pics and hang them on the wall?? If you want to do that, then that pic is the one. Good eye for them. Now if you dont mind giving all of us your home address im sure we could get a bus to take us all to your neck of the woods so you could take us for walk.. Man that is an awsome place you live at...

It would be my pleasure to share the sight's with fellow outdoors fans !!!;)

First of all Pitdog, your titles don't suck and never have. I can always tell they're yours before I see your name affixed. I like that, we're all individuals after all! Fly your freak flag high brother:D:thumbup:

Secondly, those tracks were made by a raccoon.

Thirdly, Mr. Thumbs down, this is a survival forum. Not the place to complain about cutting down pecker poles.
Chopping trees is something everyone should learn about, and the lesson Pitdog learned about this topic was worth that tree's life. Not only that, he taught all of us about what happens when you don't cut a tree clear through before pushing it over, by providing great pictures.
That lesson could make a big difference to any one of us caught in the real deal, when all the elements of wilderness survival bear down- energy loss, thirst, hunger, etc.
Red cedar grows like crazy on Vancouver island. In fact, we cut down most of it 'to support or economy', send it to Asia where it's processed then we buy it back as consumers and complain that all the forestry jobs are gone, and that stuff made from real wood is too expensive.
-sorry, rant over- got a little sidetracked there:o

I am sure the tree enjoyed it too.:thumbdn:

the trees and forests in Pitdogs area (my area too) grow very fast and the forest is tightly packed. Its really a non issue. By this time next year another shoot will have grown out of the stump. They are weeds around these parts.
