Hello folks,

I've been on a bit of a quest lately to divest myself of large portions of the low to middle range of my collection in order to pick a few excellent pieces I will treasure. I'm well on my way now with two Case/Bose collaborations, which are excellent, in my opinion. I'm a bit dismayed that no stockman pattern has emerged yet from the collaboration but remain hopeful that perhaps someday one will.

In the interim, I was hoping to pick up an excellent stockman pattern for my collection. I would prefer a production piece, which is to say something commonly available and a price below $300. I would also like it to be somewhere between 3 and 4 inches in length. My preference is for quality materials and excellent fit and finish over exotic scales or brand appeal. I have a Case small stockman with mammoth scales and it is nice, but not what I would consider "excellent", more "very nice".

I know A.G. Russell sells a stockman with BG-42 blades and Indian Stag scales. This seems like the best contender for me at the moment. It seems like a small production piece and A.G. has a reputation for quality. I would love to hear opinions of this knife but would be equally appreciative to hear other suggestions and opinions. Many thanks for your time and ideas!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the A.G. Russell.
I've bought many knives from him over the years and they've always been excellent.
Plus he offers a money back guarantee.

Schatt & Morgan made a File & Wire Stockman with ATS-34 blades.
Rarely see one for sale, though Clarence Risner shows them on one of his websites.

Queen makes a small stockman, their Model #26, with D2 steel blades. Very nice knife
available with handles of either Amber Carved Stag Bone, Birds Eye Maple, or Abalone.
Queen also makes the large stockman #9 and the Cattle King Stockman #49.

I'd also look at the medium Case with CV blades and chestnut bone handles.
Really nice knife.

Great Eastern Cutlery has an array of 3 blade knives which are like a stockman.
The quality is terrific. (Their brands are Great Eastern, Northfield, and Tidioute.)

The A.G. Russel sounds like the one to me. BG-42, Stag, and a great dealer. That or the S&M. Or even see if you can find an older Schrade 8OT or Winchester. USA made of course.

g.e.c. probably leads the pack however due to the quality heavy construction i usually use a small belt sheath to carry mine. these are great knives but are'nt lightweights.

Since the Case/Bose Collaboration knives are ideal to you, I'd have to agree with the A.G. Russell knife. Next down would probably be the Schatt & Morgan that others mentioned. If cost was an issue (Say, less than $100), I would go with either the Queen #9 Stockman (4" & mine has stag with D2 blades) or if heavier duty is more of an interest, then one of the GEC Stockmans (From either of the 3 lines that they have).

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Thanks for all the replies so far fellas. I spent some time looking and the Schatt and Morgans and they are quite nice. For some reason though all of their stockman variants (rail splitter, sowbelly) have these strange dimpled bolsters that don't really do it for me. It might seem like a trivial thing, but it kind of ruins their otherwise impressive aesthetic, for me anyway. I'm thinking about the Russell more and more but I'd like to hear more ideas if people are willing to share them. Maybe there are some lesser known or foreign brands we have not considered?

Malextwo: I've wondered about that spey myself but I thought about it and it seems like a trade off for the particularly long sheepsfoot that model features. I happen to favour the sheepsfoot over the spey, so it actually works out well for me.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their ideas so far!

It may be lowly, but I've been so impressed by my CASE Large Stockman in Amber Bone and cv. Delightful scales, well made and tough, certainly worth considering. You might be able to pick up an older one in fine condition with Redbone, they ARE something worth having in my view.

This is one of my favorites. Case 6375....
Perfect ? No. But then again no production knives are.
Excellent fit and finish

Solingen made Diefenthal. They call it a Folding Hunter, but the pattern conforms to what we know as a stockman.

4" closed
7.2" main blade open
D2000 blades
Stag scales
Pattern # DT0103

Canal Street Cutlery, makes a 4" stockman. I just got one and it is really a beautiful knife, stainless liners and 440c stainless blades. It is one of the nicest knives I have and I have quite a few.http://www.canalstreetcutlery.com/4sest.html

I'm a big fan of the stockman pattern and own quite a few production versions (between 15 and 20 I'd guess) but I don't think I could definitively categorize just one as best.

Coincidentally, I got a nice large Eye Brand stockman (stag) today and after a little love on the Edge Pro (fine diamond hone) and being finished on ceramic, it's screaming!

Steven, it's supposed to rain here tomorrow but I'll try to do so when I can.

FWIW, however, you wouldn't go far off by using this image from collectorknives.net as a go by:
