Finish blemish or blade weakness issue

Hello, long time lurker here with first post. Thanks in advance for your help.
A few days ago I purchased a new SOG Pillar which I am very excited about thus far. For those unfamiliar it is a 5" fixed blade in CPM S35, and Made in the USA.

My concern with this blade may be nothing but I am concerned enough to get opinions from you all.

On both sides of the blade there are shiny marks that look like scratches or possibly cracks. Are these marks just tool marks from the grinding or are they indications of a weakness in the blade?

The display model did not have the marks I am concerned about.
Thank you

You are probably refering to what is called a stone wash finish. Its when a knife is thrown it a roller or shaker with an abrasive of some kind depending on the finish that is desired. Its just on the flats right? And the grinded bevels have horizontal grind lines? This is a two tone finish.

It is stone washed on the flats. The marks are in the actual blade grind and look like the grinder just dug in a little extra. The problem is I am not sure they aren't cracks. There are 3 or 4 on one side and 3 on the other side farely close together. They are very noticeable and do not appear to be scratches. I figure someone with some bevel grinding experience would be able to tell right away.

Those are the photos of each side, that's the only way I could figure out how to share them.

I also think they look like grind marks. If so, it's probably only cosmetic. I'm a bit surprised though. Most SOG's I've encountered have had pretty good grinds.

I'm with the others that say it is only cosmetic. Looks like the machinery at SOG needs to be recalibrated or something.

I think it is cosmetic. But for 190$ production fixed blade I am not impressed with grind like that.

It probably slipped through because it looks like it has to be in the right light for those to be seen

Thanks for the replies. I'm just a little bummed because the display didn't look like that. As long as it's just cosmetic though it's not really an issue for me though because I bought it to get used.

Someone neglected to dress the grinding wheel. They are not cracks. The coloring looks like it was overheated from the clogged grinding wheel. This might affect heat treat. I would send it back.
All else aside, It looks like crap

Quite refreshing to read that you aren't screaming, whining about a cosmetic flaw and looking to return it for a perfect one!
Use that bad boy and go cut tons of stuff!!

Most knives that get the painted finishes, including expensive ones like Busse and others, often look like that underneath the finish and that is the reason for the painting and/or coating that gets put on. Saves lots of polishing labor cost. Although those are cosmetic scratches from the bevel grinding and/or sharpening, for such an expensive production knife they shouldn't leave the factory in that condition. I don't mind scratches on a user knife as long as I am the one that puts them on.

Thanks again for your replies. I was hoping it was only cosmetic. I did figure coated knives probably look like that underneath.

I want to use it now but I am concerned that the heat treat was affected. It will get used and show wear soon, though generally I like to be the one to put the scratches in them lol.
