Finished my First knife

I have been reading a lot and viewing many threads on making knives(Including the sticky threads). So here is my version of a camp knife. I made this to take with me on scout trips (I am the 11-year-old leader of my son's troop). That is why it has more of a belly and less of a point. This is made of O1 and was heat treated by Trugrit. This was made with hand files, sand paper and a 4 1/2 grinder with a cut of wheel. I also used a friends drill press for the holes and he just got set up to stabilize handles. This handle was the first burl that he stabilized. Some blue dye was added to give it the green color on the lighter shade of the scale. Blade length is 5", handle length is 41/2". Any questions or tips before I start the next one will be appreciated.

It looks great ! As well it looks like an ol' Greene River Trade knife. It was and is still a very user friendly knife that was common at the fur trade time.

Good looking wood and a functional shape. Great Job, especially with a file!

Add a bit more handle length next time and you'll have a knife no adult will want to let go, yet the handle length looks appropriate for the youth that you are teaching.

Cheers.

It looks good. Much better than my first attempt and I had professional help for that!

How are the handle ergonomics? Does it feel right to you?

The one thing to look at is what looks like a flat area of the blade on the transition from the belly to the point. It may only be a photo angle thing though, because it is much less noticeable in the last picture. It's unlikely to make much functional difference but may be something to consider for knife 2 :)

Thanks for the replies. It's funny how you can read and plan, but yet you learn so much from doing. This was a fun project.

Chris: As far as the handle goes it feels great in my hands. It feels like I have great control. I have to admit, though. I do have smaller hands. I did make the handle for my hands, but all future handles will be more of a normal size. I can not see any flat spot that you are referring to, but it may just be my nonexistant picture skills. To take a good picture of a knife is harder that I would have thought. It is a whole other skill. haha

Absolutely a great first effort, as said, especially with just files for shaping. Good on you brother!! the handle is beautiful, your friend did a nice job on the stabilizing of that material, the color is super!
