thanks to those who gave me tips to make this as good as possible.

lo/rez, it helps with finishing and lets you do a really lean convex grind. tommywoh, i ended up using the belt beaumont uses. i made the wheels wider and cut 2 extra grooves because i plan on getting a wider belt and cutting it to a 2'' width instead of the 1.840'' this one is. the wheels are aluminum core with a 1045 shell to help with the dishing problem i was informed about. the bearings and wheels are oversized also to help with bearing failure.

I have a rotary platen from Beaumont and yours looks as good as the one I have. You did a very nice job on the construction. Congrats, Larry

thanks for the compliments guys. today i built a two wheel platen because im thinking i might want the option of a longer span.

Mike-E,
Platens look really good!! Did you make the "notched" wheels or buy them ready made? Where?

Thanks
Steve

i made the wheels myself on a manual lathe. that was fun. the most time consuming part was trying to find the actual pitch, depth, and angle of the grooves. for anyone interested its 40 degree inclusive angle, .070 depth, and .0921 spacing.

the peaks of the belt grooves are pretty flat, but the valleys appear to be pretty sharp in comparison. i guess it probably rides more-so on the crest of the wheels.

Man, super impressive. I'd love to know which one runs smoother, and how long the wheels last.
