Phillip, To help clarify my comments above, here is a digitally modified picture of that knife incorporating a strongly canted guard without a top quillion and with the handle dropped just a couple of degrees. (IMHO the guard is actually canted too much. I got a little carried away. 
) To make a smoother line from tip to butt, my eye wants the handle to curve lightly downward (rather than being pretty straight) in a semi-pistol grip shape from about the pin location to the pommel. As always, YMMV.

Nice work. 
It looks just like a drawing I did after your post. Except the guard on yours is canted a little farther forward than my drawing. If I had a scanner, I'd post my it, but this is close enough.
