I am new to knife collecting and EDC. I am struggling between choosing Satin Finishes and Stonewash Finishes for my blades. I have done some research and have not found a straight forward answer. Are Satin and/or Stonewash finishes ever clear coated after polishing? If so why? Does it depend on the manufacturer? If so which brands so I can steer away from them? I like the look of satin finishes better for my light use but I don't want any coatings on my blades...

No they aren't clear coated (at least, not that I have seen). Some, like the Slysz Bowie have a mirror polished stonewash which is pretty sweet but it is not coated.

The only knives I have come across that are coated are this type.

These knives come with what seems to be a clear lacquer coating on them. I soak the blade in lacquer thinner and remove the coating. I prefer the changes that occur to the steel when used with out any protective coating. You can’t see all of it in my poor photo but there are some great blues and patina along with some ghosts of stain like layers. Very cool. The second knife still has the coating on the blade/I just received the knife in the mail today and have not removed the coating yet.

All the way from Japan. If anyone knows how to box up a knife to protect it in shipping these guys do ! ! ! It was perfectly protected in every way and even the invoice was folded up and put in it’s own plastic envelope. I bet the box could have floated around in the ocean for a couple of days and all would have been well.
