Hey guys,

Question for yall.

I finally am getting my grinds down pretty darn good. Using a Grizzly 2X72. Once I get my grind done, I still have the unfinished metal near the ricasso and above where the handle is going to be. Nice shiny grind, then above it is darker unfinished as well as the rest of the knife. I have tried laying the knife on the platen but found it to be 1) dangerous as it slips out from under my fingers, 2) a good way to mess up by hollow grind if I dont hit it just right and 3) innefective.

So wondering how you all go about this? Do you get the whole blank down to pretty metal before you start your grind? Sand by hand? (please no!) or something else?

Thanks!

You can flat grind using a welding magnet to hold the blade against the platen.
I'd recommend doing that first, THEN grinding bevels, if you've developed enough consistency to avoid whacking the non-bevel areas by mistake.

or...

hand sand!
hand-sanding the ricasso isn't too laborious. You will need a knife board of some sort, a clamp, a vise, and a very rigid piece of material to back the sandpaper.

I had the same issue. I've read that some makers use a welding magnet to help hold the piece up to the platen. I bought one and ground one side down slightly to leave a small step to catch the bottom of the knife blank. It works very well.

I see I was beat to it.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback. Found one on ebay for $8. Purchased it. I will try grinding it down before my bevel etc. Thanks!

It can make blade good grinding so much easier if you get the full sides done first. For straight knives, I also used the magnet. Frank

Yup, I use a welders magnet too. It always makes sense to either get surface- or precision-ground stock to begin with, or grind it flat and smooth yourself.

Ya, I am using a jig I made for my hollow grinds. Can't beat the consistency.
