Finishing blades to a good shine

I'm lookin for a little advice on finishing blades. I would like to know how some of you finish them to a good pollish. Normally once my blades are heated and quenched and I am left with a black blade, I will put a finer belt on my sander and just go over it again to clean it up. Then once the handles are on etc., I will shine it up best I can with some compound. I am kind of nervous about doing too much with the sander because I don't want to mess up any of my grinds or smooth out the lines too much where the bevel begins. Any advice? Steps?
 
what i do is i have a 1x 42 sander and where its open in the back of the belt above the platen i carfully put my finger there and lightly press on the spot i want to sand making sure not to get my finger caught between the belt and the platen untill i get all the scrathes out then keep move up to a finer grit the buff the crap out of it
 
What grit belt do you use for that? I need to buy a leather belt. I think with that and some rouge, I could get a nice shine out of it?
 
a cork belt and some rouge will give a mirror polish as long as youve got all the deep scratches out.
 
see i dont have any of those belts wjhat i have is some ceramic belts that are ranging from 220 to 800 and i start with the 220 and do that till i get all the deep scartches out and step up to the next and keep going till bythe time i get to the 800 its almost mirror but if i had some leather or cork like you are saying i wouldnt still have to spend an hour or two on the buffer
 
i have only been doing this for about 4 months myself so i havent figured out all the tricks yet so this is what has worked best for me and be carful not to get your fingers caught and not to push to hard because it will try to take your finger with it and it heats up and will burn your finger a bit
 
Yah, I've got a Pioneer 1"x42" and they say it's made at the JET and or Wilton plant. Same exact thing only cheaper. I will have to look for some finer belts I guess and go from there. Thanks
