Hey guys I did a search and found you could use canuba wax and teak oil to finish it. Also that to get it stabelized would be a good Idea. Now I plan on getting the canuba and teak tommorrow if I have to tommorrow. I have bees wax and tung oil on hand right now. Will these two give a good finish on bocote. Has anybody used these on bocote. The guy I am making the knife for did'nt want micarta or stabelized wood I had on hand. He has a bocote handled knife I made for him a few months ago and likes it. Thanks.

Frank,

If it were me, I'd use the same finish on this one as the last one you made him... unless he didn't like something about it.

The only bocote handle I've finished, I did with Pro Custom Oil from Brownell's... it's a tung oil base... the finsish is holding up just fine, so far.

It was my fourth knife and I used tung oil, about three treatments. I told him to use it every now and then to preserve the wood better. Thanks.

Personally I like tung oil. Nice penetrating finish and no need to wax after unless you want to. Just apply until it won't soak in any more, let dry, sand with some 600 / 800 grit, apply again as before, let dry then rub down with some extra fine steel wool and buff lightly.

I have some Bocote to finish as well, and this is my 1st time with this wood.
Sooooooooooo i,ll be watching this thread for advise.

I wonder if a C/A finish would be good?

Comments ?

I have an ENZO trapper blade on it's way to me with some Bocote scales in waiting...I'll finish it same way I did this un....Danish oil, a coat a day for about a week......I don't take to the buffer anymore since "the close call"

I wouldn't use the CA on bocote. It's so naturally "oily", a little Tung or Danish oil is all you need.

Why would you stabalize Bocote?? It is a naturally oily wood. Also, I would never superglue finish it either. Just sand it up real nice and buff it a bit with a rag. Sometimes I wipe on a bit of oil. BOL, or even mineral oil works fine.

Teak Oil is made for rosewood and other oily woods, like bocote. It penetratees much better than Tung Oil. Sand in a few coats until it stops sinking in well-gets sticky on surface. Then buff on wheel and burn in Carnuba wax with the buffer.

Tung and other oil finishes are thicker and do not penetrate woods like Bocote as well.

From what I have read on the cans , tung oil is recommended for indoor use only . Teak or Danish oil is for indoor and outdoor .
from woodcraft catalog " Danish oil is a blend of oils and resins . The resins polymerize and dry in the wood "

Fiddleback I like that way it looks sanded and polished but it gets dark an ugly with use wayyyyy to fast IMO.
