Finishing D2 Tool Steel

I am currently using precision ground D2 tool steel.What grit of abrasive should I use to hand sand to the final finish.Also it appears that D2 is always a little scratchy when your done.Is this just the way it is supposed to look.Thank-You
 
I have been using D2 for many years now and it always ends up with a grainy look to it. It really doesn't mirror polish easy (I don't do mirror finishes so that doesn't matter). I just give it a hand rubbed finish to 220 grit and it looks good like that.
