Hi Everyone,
I am inching forward on my first. G10 scales from USA Knifemaker.

I flatened first on the platen going up in grits to 800, then by hand . I tried to back the sandpaper when working on near the pin.

Are these voids typical? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many Thanks

II believe that you're just seeing the layers of fiberglass in the G10.

If you want really smooth and solid color, maybe try 100% alumilite resin scales? It's the same resin most people cast irregular pieces of burls, pinecones, and other stuff in for hybrid scales. They will be more brittle than G10 or micarta I think?

Brittle is the wrong word, but close. It's more fragile than G10 or micarta, but it's actually somewhat flexible.

I work with a lot of resin for other projects and you do occasionally get voids where the casting process wasn’t perfect, usually what I do is either fill with super glue or ca glue, or for large voids a clear 2 part epoxy, with the epoxy you can even mix in pigments to blend in with the material further like in this case with the fiberglass you could pigment the epoxy to match the dark layers
