I've made my 2nd sheath. It turned out not perfect but Ok for the job with brown antique stain. I'll post some pics tomorrow I hope (because of semi-tropical rains here daylight non-existent). I tried to finish some scrap leather with same stain dipping to the beeswax and carnauba wax plus a tiny bit of canola oil mix. I have no neatsfoot oil or minsk oil. The color has gone too dark but the finish was ok I guess. I didn't finish the sheath with wax dipping method, I only polished with some beeswax, it shined real nice but the leather is not protected from water I suspect.
Here are my questions:
1- To minimize the darkening after wax treatment do I have to buy some proper oil or is it normal?
2- Are there anyone boils the leather in the water to stabilize the molding and stamping?
3- When dipping the leather into the molten wax do you let the wax to go into the sheath? If it goes inside how do you remove the hard wax from there?
4- Do you dye/stain also the backside of the leather?

best regards...

Applying a wax finish will darken the color, so you need to go with a lighter shade stain than you want the finished product to be.

I don't hot dip, because I don't have the ability and I don't want to turn the leather into plastic. What I do is rub in on, then melt it in using a hair dryer.

Try a couple of finishes on scrap leather like you did, to find the color that you want.

Hope this helps a little.

There are guys in the leatherworker forum that are professional sheath, bag, and holster makers. Those guys know their poop. They are always willing to give up information also. These two sites (mostly the leatherworker site) really educated me with my sheath making. I have not been able to apply very much, but I have the knowledge. Heh, I am gonna make some vinegaroon this weekend. What is that ? Look it up!!!:D
