Finishing Micarta Scales: how and why?

I didn't do anything to mine, either the ones I ordered from Kabar or the ones I made. The latter pairs probably got nothing finer than 220 grit. I like 'em rough.

Brown wax shoe polish. Yup... shoe polish. No issues yet.

we have a winner !!!!

send me your addy and I'll get them out to you...

oh, wait a minute I thought this was a contest :D

many ways to finish micarta, with sand paper and your imagination being the best part of it..

btw, fwiw guys if you take any oil based paint (haven't used waterbase paint) and a little mineral spirits you can make any color dye/stain you want...

10:1 ratio or thereabouts..... just a drop or two of color does the trick..

Black clothing dye.

Leather dye.

Tried black and then gray and they came out too shiny for my taste!

Settled with dark green clothing dye.

Still not happy so waiting for some OD ones from Saint Cutlery.

I actually like the one in the bottom photo. I've shown this one in several threads but here is the side by side of the standard micarta with one sanded and polished and the other just as it came.
