finishing my first pocket knife

hey everybody!
i think i ripped off william henry. i kinda borrowed their spear-point design. this is my first pocket knife and i wanted to concentrate more on the execution than design, so i went with something that i knew would work.

it has .63 Ti liners and it will have a 1095 blade w/hamon

but i can decide what to do for the handle. i have a bunch of exotic carbon fiber, kevlar, G10 graphite and more exciting stuff i pulled out of a NASA dumpster behind my shop... so i thought about using a two tone apporach like that..
what do you think? what should i do?

I go G10 and carbon fiber, but that my preference. By the way, be careful of dumpster diving on government property. As a security professional with the USG, legally it's government property until it hits the bed of the garbage truck. I think you just happened upon the material on the side of the road, didn't you?

Tek, I guess that depends on where the dumpster is. Most city lots have a right-of-way/easement for an alley which is, for all intents and purposes, city property. This usually extends to the fence line on either side. If the dumpster belongs to the city and is on city right-of-way, it's fair game.

If you're hopping the fence, then that's another story. :)

That's true, based on Chris' post that it was behind his shop at NASA, I was assuming that the surrounding property for at least a 120 yards (government standard set back for facilities) would be government property in which case, local and state laws have no authority :D Believe me, I've seen these things (inane and stupid as they may be) get blown waaaaaay out of proportion.

By the way, Chris, I'm jealous you have access to that kind of material. The only thing that gets thrown away at my place is, well, trash...

Dope. Just took a look at Chris' profile. I didn't realize he was working AT NASA. I was picturing his shop adjacent to a NASA facility with a dump out back.... You're perfectly correct, of course, Erik.

Chris, just out of curiosity, what kind of work are you doing with NASA? I really look forward to seeing this one finished up, and maybe some progress pics if you took 'em. I always enjoy following your work, and your original drawing looked great.

Folks,

I went to the site, to see the new knife. I didn't find it, but I did find this gem, among others:

Chris, I've said this before, but I'll say it again. Your knives impress me. From your avatar and handle it is obvious you're young, and for some reason that immediately makes me surprised your design and skill is at this level (shame on me). If you haven't put this knife in the custom and handmade knife forum you should. If you're too modest, do you want me to do it?

hey guys,

as for the dumpster diving.. i was literally saving pieces out of the back of a trash truck. the guy was loading.. and he helped me save a few pieces. i got a tip that all the stuff was there and just barely made it before it got driven away.. i will have to post some pics of the stuff.. kinda cool. i will be careful pulling stuff out of dumpsters... but if they are driving it away... *winks*

as for what i do at NASA, i actually am here to learn the tricks of the trade from all the old guys who are retiring... the average age in NASA is like 48... so they need new guys to come in a learn this stuff before everybody retires. i am learning to be a technician... the guy who builds the shuttle..not designs it... so i get to do alot of hands on work... right now i am rotating through the whole center (14 positions) as an apprentice. i liked the model shop and the machine shop best so fa, but i am in destructive testing right now and it is pretty awesome here too

as for my age.. i dont know.. 2 years ago i kinda had an epifany and realized that yeah.. it is ALOT of work to get out all the scratches... and it tkes more work to do it. right.. but if it looks better doing it right.. then it is worth the time.. and starting with this knife:

i started doing things "right" not that everything was perfect.. but if you look at the knives i made right before that one.. oh my.

as for the knife you posted nathan, i haven't put it in the custom area... i put it in the for sale area.. and it sold.. so.. if you would like to put it up, i would be quite flattered. the specs are in the for sale post. also for the age/design/skill thing.. when you mingle with giants, you tend to grow more than if you were to surround yourself with pigmies.

thanks so much for the feedback.. i think i am going to try either g10 and carbon.. or carbon and kevlar
peace,
~chris
