I have a few problems I ran into. After heat treat, since I only have a 1x30 sander, I dont have any room to run the blade flat and get all the scale and black off efficiently. Also for finishing the grind and the ricasso, do you hand sand? Or use your grinders? I find after heat treat and try cleaning up the grind I'm not good enough yet and I'll mess up the grind or take up higher than I'd like.
It would be a lot of hand sanding getting a good finish on the rest of the blade but, any tips would be great. I was thinking about a high grit flap wheel for my angle grinder but, very unsure yet.

I found that hand sanding the scale off hi carbon steel is not that hard with 120 grit paper. Watch Nick Wheeler hand sanding videos for further

Ok thanks! I've seen a few of his videos. I like them. What about finishing? The same? I know Walter Sorrells does a lot of hand sand finishing but, wasn't sure if there were easier ways.

Nick again for finishing, also Anderson Forge youtube video I believe video #6 gives some valuable advice on finishing. Watch both and make yourself sanding stick.

Thanks a lot Utican. I will definitely check them out.

I looked up Anderson Forge and I'm not sure which video you mean. No video name with 6 and his 6th video is only 2 minutes long, lol.

Your going to get a lot more scale and pitting with a forge, or at least I do, when forging I never went past 120, and I leave a little extra meat on the bone so to speak, forge pitting can be kinda deep

Ive noticed a bit, slightly, but its not too bad. I watched a few of Gough Customs on Youtube and he does most his blade finishing with hand sanding blocks.....now just need to find a block like his :D

I hand sand after heat treat but I go outside for heat treating and use an oven. Scale is not that hard to get off by handsanding. I made sanding sticks copied from Nick Wheeler's video and plan on making a sanding block like Gough has on his video one I get my mill.....hopefully by the first of next month.
