How is everyone finishing S90V? My first try at 90 and I have blades rough ground and heat treated (turned out pretty good for first time..63C down to 60-61C final) but am struggling with the finish grind.

Tried progressing from 60-220-320-440-A45-A30-A16 and cannot get an acceptable finish. One blade is hollow ground, one is flat and the flat ground blade gets waves throughout the face. I colored the face with a sharpie and when grinding the entire blade is touching the platen but small waves appear no matter what I do. I am thinking that a mirror finish is out of the question! lol

Any suggestions or threads on the topic?

S90v does not take a mirror finish, it's one of those steels that is a struggle to get a nice finish on. Satin can be done but I would recommend a stone wash or tumbled finish with ceramic media.

I've made 3 blades from it and they performed fantastic but each has some small pores that wouldn't allow me to do a high satin so I tumbled them, and one I copper washed.

clean your platen gator belts some times load the platen and then they grind wormy waves in the blade and it sucks to no end
your more sadest then i high alloys liek that i belt finish to A160 and lightly scottbrite the finishe ( a coarse but even finish looks better then an uneven extra fine finish )
