Just completed my first stag handled knife, almost.

What should I put on the stag as a final finish?? They are slabs about 4.5" long and 1.5" wide glued w/epoxy and pinned with 304 ss pins.

Put you a coat of "Teak Oil" on pretty wet. Let it set for about 15 minutes, then wipe it dry. When it is completely dry (usually about 24 hours), take a coarse piece of cloth (blue-jeans) and slick it down. It will make that stag "JUMP".

I have also used "Tung Oil", but that dries a little faster and you have to go over it with #0000 steel wool.

There are many, many ways to make that stuff look good. I know someone else will chime in with another method.

Hope this helps.

Sand the exposed white areas smooth 400 grit and buff with white compound until the surface looks like glass...about 30 seconds or so.

The brown area will shine up as well but will retain it's colour.

I like the Stag as it is. Looks great to me. You can buff it with a clean buffer wheel with nothing on it. Good looking knife. The photo below is Sambar Stag. I have about 50 pairs.

how does one go about jugding a pair a stab scales or rounds? i see listed prices and cant seem to figure it . most of the time some of the cheaper looking pieces look better to me? its not exactly easy for a person with no experience to pick the right stuff the first time. thanks sry for the hijack.

Since you have a belt finish on the blade the satin look is best for the stag handle, just oil or wax the handle and it will look really good.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate everyones advice.

When I selected stag and working for the first time be careful about the shape. Most of the less expensive did not have a uniform cross section width which makes for a less attractive handle.
