Hi all,

I am going to Helsinki in January and considering to get a folding knife from a Finnish knife manufacturer during my short visit there.
I guess I am going for a light weight knife with a 3" blade or shorter.
I would appreciate your suggestions and recommendations!

Few Finnish manufacturers make folding knives. I suggest you visit Marttiini shop at the center of Helsinki: http://www.marttiini.fi/epages/Mart...=/Shops/MarttiiniShop/Categories/Yhteystiedot This is the selection that they have: http://www.marttiini.fi/epages/Mart...p/Categories/Taittoveitset&PageSize=50&Page=1

If you decide to buy a puukko there are other choises. At the same block right beside the Marttiini shop there is the artisan's store, if I remember right they also sell puukkos. http://www.visithelsinki.fi/en/see-...g/kasityolaisten-oma-kauppa-artisans-own-shop

Also at the Market hall at Hakaniemi, street address is Hämeentie 1a, you can find puukkos. Go to the second floor there, there is a shop that sells those among other things. They sell at least Wood Jewel, Marttiini and Järvenpää models.

Also at the market place right by the sea you could find a salesman selling puukkos. Anyway all of these places are worth a visit.

Brisa and their Enzo line is in my opinion the best maker or folding knives in Finland. They do not have a store in Helsinki.

Thank you, HFinn.
Marttiini shop has a nice selection of knives.
I will definitely visit there as well as the places you suggested.
And yes, I have been spying on Enzo knives, which seem fantastic.
Too bad they don't have a shop in Helsinki.
I am now very much looking forward to visiting Helsinki for the first time and in winter!

I actually took a look at "Taittokätevä", the aluminium handle model. It looked like a solid folder that you don't have to baby too much. It is light and has a scandi grind blade. The Pelican with birch scales is also an option, but the large flanges on the pivot are not to my taste.

At first, I was not sure which one you were talking about on the Marttiini site. Then I turned to their finnish language page and understood what it is.
Yes, the aluminum handle model looks really nice.
The ones with curly birch scales also look great and like puukko.
I like that, too.
I will definitely get one there.

EnZo knives would have been great choice, but unfortunately I don't live in the HKI area so I don't know if you can find any there.
Anyway, welcome and enjoy your stay!

Thanks, A.L.!
I will enjoy my stay and knife hunting there!

My goodness! It is really cold in Helsinki (-10 F now)......
I hope I will survive a walk from the station to the Marttiini shop.

Wellcome to Finland! :D Don't worry, it was -41,2 degrees Celcius in Lappland. It is nice and lukewarm here in Helsinki compared to that.

I read that it has been -70 in Siberia in 1924, so....

Wow guys......
Lukewarm at -22C.......

Well, I kinda get used to it already, partly because there is almost no wind (gladly).
I am looking forward to seeing knives of Finland soon!

Miso 2, The Helsinki Knife show is the 8&9 of Jan, at the Hotel Scandic park. John

John,

Thank you for the heads-up.
What a coincidence!
I think I will have a time on Saturday and see if I can sneak in to the show.

Thank you guys for help.
Although I did not have enough time (and guts) to walk to the knife show, I managed to visit the Marttiini shop despite the cold weather (to me) and snow.
I ended up getting a puuko there instead of a folding knife.
Thanks again!

Excellent! Which one did you choose? I would say you made a good choise. Marttiini makes good working fixed blades, when my boys were in the boy scouts I bought both a Marttiini and they served well. If you want a Finnish folder Enzo is the way to go.

HFinn,

I think I got a Lynx 131 and was told that it is one of the original designs by the founder of Marttiini.
Here are the outcome of my latest trip.
