As someone who makes his living putting out fires let me add my 2cents.Get everyone out,call fd,THEN use extinguisher.
The time to call is not after you find out its to much for your extinguisher,or what you think is out isn't!
Keep yourself between the fire and an exit.
Some of our "best" fires have been ones people tried to put out before calling,including one in which a grandmother and 3 kids died,after the matteress they "put out" got jambed in the stairway as they were carring it out and lit up again going right up the stairs and killing 4 people.
Learning WHEN to use it should be number one.When is after everyone is out after the fd is called and on small contained fires,(pots,trashcans etc) after that its a roll of the dice.
