Thought I would post a reminder for everyone to check your fire extinguishers and make sure they are still good.

Also a reminder for all the new smiths...if you don't have one yet go out and buy three!;)
They sure do come in handy when you need them!

AND If you are working with titanium or cobalt, get yourself one rated for metal fires

I work in a plant where we make nickel titanium superalloys. We actually USE our fire extinguishers. Metal fires are scary s*&t! and you do not want to hit them with an ABC extinguisher.

Make sure your quench oil is in a metal container with a snug fitting cover to keep out dirt and smother flames !

Another good shop fire safety tips is; always stop making fire or sparks at least 45 minutes before you plan on leaving, then do a thorough walk-through to sniff out any smoulder smoke. It could be the difference between having a shop to come back to and not.

Yes, my bucket of quench oil was plastic, until the point of blade when through the side during a quench. Man, that really torked me off when I saw a stream of oil coming out of the bucket.

Thanks for the reminders!

Good thing it wasn't a flaming stream!
