I like to carry a couple of those joke birthday candles that you can't blow out. I put them in my match case.

Consider keeping a key chain kit, with small led light, whistle, small knife, mini-firesteel, and compass. If you get separated from your BOB, you want the rock-bottom basics on your person.

Looks like you have plenty of redundancy there.

Thanks Dale
I have a mini kit attached to my knife sheath. Its contains basic fire needs.
Trick candles are a great idea.
Thanks again..

Looks like a good, well rounded kit. Seems most people focus on first stage tinder in their kits though, and there are tons of suggestions for those on here. I'd suggest some second stage tinders though in a BOB, after all, if you're bugging out, there's no telling what the conditions will be.
Ranger bands(pieces of inner tube), duct tape(burns well and can help keep first stage tinder from blowing away), and paraffin soaked cardboard would be a few good ones to help get damp kindling lit when the traditional tinders don't.
There are some recipes out there I believe for the paraffin and cardboard mixture. Some use egg crates filled with sawdust, etc. As an off the cuff idea you could make the sawdust from fatwood. Just tossing some stuff out there for you to consider. Other than that, sounds like you got the bases and redundancy covered.

If you can find any locally, I dont know what its called, but its like a really thick caardboard, kinda like a HUGE match, even burns for a minute or more by its self, I'll look and see If I can find them.

Coghlan makes those.

You might think about a RAT fire steel. It's harder to strike than a regular ferro-rod, but it'll set just about anything in the forest on fire without tinder. Has a capsule for the handle for other survival items. Only around $25, too.

Jute twine is a mainstay in my firekit. Makes great tinder. Id add a chunk of fatwood to the mix as well.

Looks overall like a great kit. My suggestion is to practice with it, then you will get a feel for what tinder, and starters work for you. I hate those spark-lites, not a fan. they remind me of a bic w/o any fuel.

Heres an interesting article on sparklites and Zippos.

Go to the side menu, and scroll down to zips and sparklites

Overall its a good site, I dont know if I agree with his personal opinions on certain things, but there is alot of good info, and neat tricks there.

looks alot like my fire kit...

(from left to right) i have cotton string and cotton webbing saturated in candle wax. fatwood sticks rubber banded together, altoids tin with fatwood shavings and fatwood toothpicks, candle, matchsafe full of PJCB, 3/8" firesteel and striker. i keep it all in a zippered cloth pouch. used to be tied up in a bandana, but this is a little more convenient to access.

it normally just takes a single fatwood toothpick and a bundle of dry kindling to get a fire going. i always have a lighter in my pocket, lately a Bic, and i just light the fatwood stick with that and hold it under the kindling bundle until it starts to catch. then i set both down and gently feed it with more kindling until i get something resembling a coal bed. once it is going nice and hot, i start building up fuel size if possible.

it that isn't working, then i can build it up with a longer burning flame from the PJCB, larger chunks of fatwood, or the wax soaked cotton. the PJCB and the fatwood dust will light with the firesteel, the others need a flame to ignite.

Practice with those "NATO matches." They work by jamming them into the striking panel (They are NOT "strike anywhere.") at an angle rather than dragging them across the striking panel.

I agree on the giant match things....Zip are my favourite brand !

FatWood...ya can never have enough with ya !

I prefer lamp oil soaked cotton balls to petroleum jelly....try both in windy, rainy conditions and see which ya prefer !

Maybe swipe a gob of PJ on them and then soak them with oil!:D

Dan, if you can't make a fire with all the redundancy you've got you'd better stay home!

OK, if you want *one* more type of long burning tinder, get some WetFire tabs. Oh, and wrap your wax candle in some foil (goo factor if it gets melty).

Thanks, i put some wetfire tads in there already and will add foil to the candle.
