Here are a few photos of the finished design. The inside of the capsule is .800" in diameter. With the cap screwed on you have about 1.2" of open space inside (lengthwise) - plenty of room to store a mini survival kit and a piece of tinder. I checked this sample by submerging in water for 15 minutes. When I unscrewed the cap it was bone dry inside. The cap is machined to accept a 20mm button compass (compass will be user supplied). Finished production pieces will be anodized and have the RC SERE logo on them. We are going with the misch metal rod on this since it is a last-ditch emergency kit and not for every day fire starting. The capsule gives the short misch metal plenty of handle to work with. Haven't worked out pricing or delivery yet, but that's coming soon.

That looks awesome.

Will the rod be replace-able once it is used up or will it be a disposable item?
Does the rod go all the way through or does it sit in a "cup"?

Right now, the rod is epoxied into place. The hole is a thru-hole. We're testing the glue to make sure it will not break apart under stress. If this works then the thru-hole will allow the potential of replacing the rod by heating the glue and removing the old rod. At least I think that will work. Will probably only come in one color to start with. We're looking at green anodizing.

Looking Good...
nice billet handle ,can not wait to see a price and if the rod is replaceable somehow. if not maybe JB weld in a standard LMF ferro rod after misch rod is gone,So not to waste a great handle....
Great little fire starter kit,I know I will pick up a few.

Pure genius! I'll take five! As a question are there any plans on making sheath loops that will hold these? While I already plan on getting an Izula I'd love to be able to put one on the side of my RC-3 as well!

Sweetness. Almost as exicited as looking at a knife. Jeff those must be your hands, I wouldn't forget a hand that pinches me in the butt while getting out of a jungle boat!

Wrong hand. My right hand has pinched a lot of butts though and yours may have been one of them!

Since you're labeling this SERE, are you going to make a pouch that attaches to the SERE knife sheath for it?

Also, how does the button compass attach? Does it snap in, or do we have to epoxy it?

Will probably only come in one color to start with. We're looking at green anodizing.

Why green? So you can find it when you drop in the jungle/grass right at the moment you're in so much distress/wet/cold that you need fire the most and think: "I can use my last ditch RAT survival fire kit." Then, crawling on hands and knees in the grass/mud, trying to find this well camouflaged green fire kit you think: "now why didn't they make it in 'Blaze Orange'.....:D

Cpl, we're working with Eagle now on an RC-5 SERE sheath that does include a pouch.

As for colors, we're going to have to look at what's available on anodizing. The red anodizing is too dark. The green is actually a pretty bright color so unless we can find something better that might be the best. With all that said, there are those that buy kit from us that don't like a bright color since if they can see it easily then others can too.

I'm thinking with the SERE tag, it's for people who want to Survive, Escape, Resist and Evade. Hi-Viz doesn't really go with that philosophy.

I was actually thinking the green would be too bright as well.

Cpl, I agree. Maybe we will do the brighter green initially and then make a couple of different colors as this thing progresses.

BTW: forgot to answer your other question: the compass will have to be supplied and glued in by the user. The cap is made to fit a standard 20mm button compass without much slack around the diameter.

Jeff that thing is BAMF. im gonna have to order two and replace one rod with a lmf. love the capsule. and i agree cpl i would like a darker one. if i want it to be seen ill tie some orange para cord on it. a dark forest green would be cool or black?
