Here is one of the new model Firekits. This one would also work great for a bird & trout, or EDC blade. The notches on the spine really throw the sparks!

You know what may be better than a fire kit? I had a little pocket knife like that I loved! I used it for so much stuff it would get dull (like cutting vinyl floor tiles) When I still needed it. Then I had to wait til I got to a sharpener to use it again. So maybe if you made one with a diamond rod or type of sharpening thingy with a handle like that. That would be pretty sweet. Either way love the package!
 
Man if you could make that pocket sheath into a neck sheath that would be an awesome backpack set up. Very sweet rig.

Happy Birthday to your son! I keep an old firesteel on hand to test these, they really throw the sparks.
