of fire kits? i was sitting here today and i was thinking of how many fire kits i really had....i broke out all the sheaths that housed them and found three...

three very well thought out and executed kits...

i just didnt think that was enough...

so four more later...i know have 7

the coolest one is my old m16 cleaning kit...you know the soft side job..

three 5-6 inch long 3/4 inch thick pieces of fatwood
12 little fire starting squares from home depot(wettender)
fire steel, striker, bic lighter, REI stormproof matches, 10 firestraws, 25ft of jute twine.

let me get my camera up and running and i will get pics

I've gotta get over the theft and rebuild my survival, and fire kits. I have stuff in a paper bag I've been collecting to do this, but just haven't had the heart. Especially my fire kit. What theiving assbag is going to know how to use flint and steel, firesteel, charcloth, etc.

As the saying goes two is one and one is none. My SAR gear has three methods of starting and three different tinders. Two in the vest and one attached to the knife sheath. Additionall the knife and sheath in my wifes car kit has one method and two tinders plus two methods and two tinders in the kit itself. I beleive in redundancy. (Or overkill depending on how you look at it)

Depends on how good you are at making a bow drill on the spot and getting it to work. Probably can't have too many.

I would be pretty sensitive to cold with a few of my health clitches so I want three or four ways to start a fire and making a firebow or trying to use sparke for the initial fire won't get it for me. I need lighters, Matches, lighter fluid and that sort of things. I have my Bic and my Zippo plus the more primative methods.

At first I thought you meant 7 full kits, if you include tinder I think I have you beat.
Cheapo orange match case full of fat wood splinters, another full of waterproof matches,
3 firesteels, 1 large bic, 1 small bic, visine bottle of lighter fluid, some drier lint, possibly some cotton balls and pj, rolled up birch bark squares, (half a pencil size I guess) and compressed sawdust board stuff from a thread earlier today.:D
Lets see, 9, possibly 12, not too shabby! But for me these methods are for using whenever I start a fire, not to be hoarded away for some emergency. They are put in several places all over my person and pack and piggybacking on lanyards and such.
The lighter fluid I guess is my last ditch, fall through the ice method, you could start a fire underwater with that.

oh i did mean 7 full kits....each one has a lighter, ferro rod, matches, and or striker wheel type...sparklight or coleman lantern lighter...fatwood chunks pj balls or quik tender, wet tinder or firesquares...and jute twine...

as for tinder...:D
2+ lbs of birchbark
40+ lbs of fat wood
god know how many bags of cotton balls i mixed with pj...i have 6 tupperware sandwich containers full...
around 48 esbit tabs i may have used 1 or 2
i have a HUGE block of magnesuim from a water heater(i think thats what its from)
3 1 gallon ziploc bags of dryer lint...
3 100 ft rolls of jute twine... i really need to get you all pics of the stuff...

oh it isnt hoarded away.....i have a lighter in my pocket with my army steel....and in my back pocket i have birchbark wrapped around a thick piece of fatwood...the kits are just a fun thing to make for me....i usually have at least 8 fire starting methods on my person....in pockets and kits...

Yikes, you carry 40 pounds of fatwood with you in the woods?
I think you mean all the fire stuff you have lying around the house, do you?
You could build a nice shelter with 40 pounds of fatwood.

Geez......Langy put down the kits bro, wait for wifey to look for you outside and pelt her with a snow ball....breaks up the boredom...Don't wait on her you might freeze...better yet call her outside...LOL !

One on your person at all times-- neck lanyard, pocket kit, etc--- something that will stay with you if you fall in a stream, run from a bear, or roll down a hillside. And then another in your pack. Both are for emergency use and you carry matches and/or lighter for your everyday stove/campfire tasks. The scenarios I work from assume I have lost my pack.

I have a DM le in a Spec-ops sheath....in the pouch is: LMF firesteel(scout model),zipbaggy w/magnesium shavings, quick tinder ,dryer lint, whistle, signal mirror ,sm.fishing kit/lifeboat matches, small button compass all in the sheath, on my belt . So if I am seperated from my pack, camp or any scenario....every basic item is on my belt. looking to add a spec-ops double pistol mag pouch to the backside to hold a mylar blanky and sm.1st aide kit...

i want to "cuddle" with my wife...fastest way to not get to do that is pelt her with a snow ball.......

Dang it ,I knew I was doing it wrong....I thought it was like grade school, pulling hair meant you really liked her...15yrs. of marriage and still can't do nothing right ...LOL !
