I've been tinkering around the past few days, and I've been thinking about putting together a new fire kit.

I've made some firestraws in the past, and I still like them, but I'm moving away from my altoid kit, and I'd rather have something more extensive, yet small.

I've got several ferro rods, and mini-lighters. But I don't have anything well assembled.

I really like this:

. But I'd rather have it a 3" version I think.

What do you have in your kits? Anything unique? I've had a micro-pencil sharpener that has been helpful in making quick shavings.

What do you carry your stuff in?

L!

i got a ton of old pill bottles that i like to use for kits. they are pretty much waterproof, extremely durable, and, best of all, easy to come by. i got one bottle that is about 1'' in diameter and 2.5'' tall the i am going to use to make a new edc firekit. it will contain some fire straws (steak n' shake straws are the ones i use, as they are the largest) a ferro rod blank, a dozen or so waterproof strike any where matches and a hacksaw blade. i will also scrape about a table spoon of magnesium shavings into the bottle. i might also add some bits of fatwood, depending on the room i have left.

Nice kits boys..I 2 seperat fire kits.. 1 really small 1 for my psk..
a bic mini lighter
a bsa hotspark
some matches
pj cotton
jute twine
trick b-day candles
My primary kit is similar only more tinder and a full size lighter more matches, afew candles , and a lmf firesteel

now that I'm trying to become more bushcrafty I'm contmplating outting together a more traditional kit.

Generally I carry a large Bic in my pocket, LMF Firesteel inside my Leatherman Charge Sheath - barely noticable there - fits perfectly between the two layers of elastic on the side) & on my keyring have a mini mag/ferro rod that I got from Tadgear a while back.

I REALLY like the goinggear solution though - might have to grab one sometime - thanks for posting that.

I keep most pieces spread all over my person, ferro rods on lanyards and knife sheath,
match safe full of tinder and matches, and I keep a tinder kit with yet another ferro rod, a mini bic and various pjcbs and fatwood splinters.

Right now I am trying to think of a good ferro striker that could double as an adequate blade if it was all I had. I usually have 3 or 4 ferro rods on me, and I want 1 for each. A buck hartsook would be ok, but not quite. (I have 1 already.)

MTNFOLK MIKE!!! thank you for posting that lighter trick!!!!! i ahve had several lighters empty out while being josteld in the kit. I nver though to use a mini zip tie!

thanks

A rubber band will work also if you don't have zip tie
I always carry an assortment ....

My kit contains:

Ferro rod
Piece of Fatwood
Jute twine
PJCB's
Bic lighter

I just recently tried making a fire using fatwood for the first time
That stuff is amazing ..... just a few shavings go a long way

Not sure what all I carry. I have one of the Air Force on handed flint wheels on my keychain, a bic in my pocket, another ferro and a few lighters in my small camelbak along with PJCBs, ranger bands, jute, a small firestarter log thing (not sure what it's called), and a few small flares, and a small molle admin kit that is in my belt with a lighter and a small mag and ferro rod.

I don't carry just one fire kit, because I'd lose it. I like redundancy to overcome my dunce-ancy.

EDIT: I have also a few magnifying lenses (one fresnel in my wallet, one larger lense, reading glasses, and my compasses also have a magnifying lense), a spare set of shoelaces (bow and drill), some wire, and spare batteries. I guess those are backup "fire kit" also.
