hey normark,

got it on ebay. the tube is for storage, everything fits neatly inside. also came with an extra roll of char cloth.

FUN is right! I just got an Aluminum Fire Piston from michaelmcgo today. The smell of burning fills the air around me. :D

It's not a toy, though. Fire pistons make one more backup in a compact emergency kit.

I've had mine about a year and it's a blast to use, I had a thread somewhere with pics on the forum about it a while ago, now I'm into flint and steel fire startin' this is a lot easier to lug around.

I do still carry the tinder box no matter what method of fire startin' I use.

I have noticed the bulkier fire pistons are easier to get results with the first time out.

its funny, i have so many ways of fire starting in my pack now: waterproof matches, treated cotton, firesteel, fire piston, butane lighter....

can anyone say OVERKILL! :)

that damn thing is gettin heavy: knife, 550 cord, first aid kit, sewing kit, two flashlights, multitool, batteries, fire stuff, pocket heaters...

i keep adding stuff, i think its time to down size.

Esav, I would have thought that aluminum would be too heat conductive and defeat the purpose . I learned about fire pistons when I was just a little kid back in ancient times .It was one of those cases of a "primative" group developing a neat machine .A few more parts and some keosene and you'd have a diesel engine !!

You don't get time enough to conduct any heat away from the tip of the piston where the tinder sits. Bang! you smash it down to the bottom and the compression ignites the tinder, pops the piston back up and you pull it free and blow gently on the already glowing tinder, then knock it off into a pile of whatever flammables you have ready.

I remember reading about jars found in an ancient Mesopotamian dig that would generate electricity. They were probably used to metal-plate objects placed in them. The technology died out in a relatively short time -- evidently the intellectual property of a clan that never shared the secret with anyone else.

Esav, MORIMOTOM, those are nice fire pistons........how can I order some........:D

Michael ?

Really........it looks so simple to do, got to have a few of these.
