Fire Piston........what's best ?

I have a fire piston and it's ok........but it really only works best with the custom tinder supplied with it.

I'm thinking that one that would allow other materials would be more useful.

Has anyone found one that they especially like? Reasons ?

Ditto, the rod makes a difference with the tinder that works best.

So far I have tried Char Cloth, Tinder Fungus and the stuff EBprimitives sends out with his, and all ignite usually on the first push in both my pistons. For me tinder fungus usually works the best, and smells the best.

I happened upon this one purely by mistake but it works for me. If you have any of those moving blankets laying around? you know the ones with the quilted type material? anyway I had a ripped blanket that the filling (whatever it is?) was coming out of and as it turns out that stuff works great!

Is a wood or aluminum rod better?

Mine is an EB Primitives.

It has a wooden shaft.

The tinder holder is a cross-cut slotted screw. It doesn't hold very well.

I'm thinking about taking a fine file and make the slots into more of a dovetail.
