Great thread Riley, Yes prep is very important. Having a good base and enough the proper size initial fuels is key to fire starting here because it is so often wet or damp. I use different things here at different times. Sometimes I just use leaves, other times I'll use bark, sometimes I make a base of dry twigs (couldn't find a pic of the twigs). I almost always get my initial fuels from off the ground even when it's really dry just from habit. The very tips of long dead pine tree branches and the dry vines that have been broken and just hanging in the breeze for some time work great too.

What you don't want to use for tinder or fuels is also very important here but we'll safe that for another thread :)
