We all seem to like fire and videos, so here are a couple of videos about fire that I made:

Part 1

Part 2

They are instructional videos for a fire kit I made for a forum member who won a photography assignment on my site. She is already afraid that she might burn her house or the forest down, so my part is done. :)

Looks pretty good, Marshall. Between that kit and the instructional video, I would like to imagine that the recipient should be able to start a fire decently.

It is notable that you didn't include matches. I don't prefer matches, myself. However, between their popularity, their ease to acquire, their low price, and their familiarity, I'm surprised you chose not to add them. It often seems like almost everybody except me insists that matches are a must-have firestarting device.

Based on my experience, I would venture to guess that the stick of fatwood in your video could've been lit pretty easily with the lighter... probably about as easily as the home-made tinder.

You should probably add some discussion about having your kindling ready, about how to build a fire, etc.

Overall, good stuff.

That's next. I already went over the limit on the youtube length, which is why there were two videos. :)

I plan on making some more videos on batoning, fuzz sticks, site preparation, safety, leaving no trace, etc. Next up is some help on identifying fatwood stumps since a few people asked for that and I have a fresh stump sitting in my backyard.

I know it has been said before, but matches are a waste of space to me. I can fit much more effective and long lasting tools/materials in the space that matches would normally occupy. I always find survival kits with 4-5 matches in them amusing. How many people can light a fire with one match? What happens if a couple are duds? Give me a mini bic or firesteel any day over a box of matches.

The fatwood probably could have been lit easily with a lighter, but it would have taken a little preparation. It had been sitting out in the sun for a few weeks, so the outside was relatively dry. I think the Coghlan's fire sticks are easier to use, so I generally save my fatwood until I really need it, since it seems to burn hotter and longer.

Mike, you should enter the next assignment and show them some REAL competition. :D

lol
yeah mike.
:D
I think he has all the firestarting stuff down pretty good though.
:D

I just started putting together a firestarting kit so this vid really helps.
thanks.

I'm sure I can scrounge up something else to give away. :)
