Fire starting with fire bow, etc...

Well how soft is the board? Are we talking like Balsa-wood? I hadnt considered that... i can see how it would be a problem, you would have to essentially restart.

no it wasn't that soft. I'm terrible with know what is what. prolly half my problem.

I've had good success with the bow drill, but I don't think I have the patience(or at least not with available material in my area) for the hand drill.I made a pump drill a month or so ago, alot easier to use but in my opinon requires better matterial than the bow-drill(at least the way I use it LOL)
Flint and steel is a relatively reliable way of making fire ,but it is pretty dependent on prepared tender.Plus I haven't practiced much sense I got a shard of steel in my eye.
I pretty much use either a ferro rod or a bic most of the time, but try to keep up my bow skills.

I picked up the book 'SAS Survival Handbook'. I have been reading and rereading it now for about 3 weeks.

Are you finding this book to be a useful one for the survival skills you are aiming to learn/utilize? Simply curious as to your opinion on the book.

Thanks,

The main point is to get a nice pile of dust that acts kinda like char cloth and then turns into a cherry from the heat. Get something under the board to hold it and allow you to carry it to your tinder nest. If you really want to get your foot in the door, check out Primitive Fire and Cordage by John Mcpherson. Most extensive material on the subject I have ever seen. Good Luck.

I will try to post more later, but I have been more or less without a computer for a month . . .
