What do you guys use for a metal match? What is a good place to purchase from? I have a four inch metal match that I really like, but the company i got it from replaced it with an lesser quality one. Any other methods I should know about?
This is the good one...

Like other products, quality varies with the "metal match" ("fire steel" "ferrocerium") The Light My Fire models all seem good. Others can chime in with their experiences.

As for "other methods," are you asking for "primitive" methods of starting a fire or other relatively easy "modern" methods?

try bensbackwoods he has a good slection i like the strike force it's on of my favs..

For mische metal type rods - Goinggear.com. Owner is a frequenter here on BF - and, well, it is good to support the local members brother. Actually going gear has an amazing array of sizes and thickness' to choose from in blank and handled versions.

Ben's backwoods offers a good varied of Light my fire - firesteels which are good quality but a different character than the mische types. I'm slowly storing to like the mische type rods better.

Knivesshipfree has barkie-handled firesteels. They are expensive but purty.

I've got to get me one of those. I have a primus brand stick that seems more mich-metaly than my swedish scout. but it could be in my head. and yes I do see the ridiculousness in calling something less specific than something else. it seems harder, and I have had curls come off of it if I'm not fast enough.

I've got Army and Scout LMF firesteels , An Ultimate Survival Blast Match and Strike Force, and Going Gear firesteels. I think the US and Going Gear are significantly superior to the LMF steels and the LMF steels are great.

Thank all of you guys for the responces! I like what I see on Going Gear. Great website and great prices. I bought 8 of the rods from another source, they are terrible. When I complained to the owner, he said no, they are better than the previous ones... Not when I say their not, Customer is always right! They aren't as hot and not as easy to strike. What is the technical difference of the mische metal and the other types.
Thanks again! I love it!

today at our Canadian BF member hike, JCA21 had a honking 1/2" x 6" firesteel from STORL here. That puppy threw BIG long lasting sputtering sparking sparks. In comparison the sparks from my Primus firesteel were paltry in comparision

Yeah, I hear that Going Gear place is pretty awesome. I recommend them as well. :D

I went with Going Gear. I figured out that the store I purchased from previously, had the same mische metal ones, but they switched to a newer brand that I don't like. I went with some of the smaller ones on my order, but will be placing an order for many more in a week or two.... Thought it would be nice to play with some of the smaller ones and build deer horn antlers on them as gifts.
