Fire-steel

Can't wait to see it. For some reason a cantelope size rock weighing about 10 pounds is stuck in my head.:D

I've heard you mention it before in other threads that you use a rock and I've always been curious.

Ok, so it is a little larger then a thumbnail, but here it is with an Izula for reference of the size. Goes into my pocket everyday. That little moon-ish type shape on the upper right strikes my ferro rod perfectly.

Yeah, It seems most any sharp edge will do the trick. I tryed a bunch of stuff when I got my first ferro fire kit from ESEE. I did a hacksaw blade, but it was so-so, then 5-6 kinds of local rock, (quartz seemed to work the best, kind of a tie with a local chert) I did a number of kitchen blades, some cheap stainless steel, and they did'nt do much, then I did this little promo gift nail-file folder with a 3/4 in. blade in it (very crude sharpening on the blade) but thats the one Thats in my pocket as of Now. I just ordered a misch rod from goinggear and their stricker to see how well that works? I should get it in about 2-3 more days. (Very cheap, less than 2 bucks, small 1 in. and could be a keychain or pocket carry) I wonder if it will work as well as my small promo blade? that lil thing throws near blobs off of ESEE's firekit. Have fun tryin out stuff. You may be suprized at what works and what dos'ent. enjoy edgy
I have a pic of the lil blade in a thread I did about it say 2 months ago.
Here in the ESEE home of great blades thread.:D

I have a Going Gear striker duct taped (jute is taped to rod, jute tied to striker. Jute to be used as emergency tinder. While wrapping extra duct tape for.. whatever.. and a handle)

It is a great little striker for when I use my Mischmetal rods. (The rock works, too, but not as well on Misch as a regular firesteel)

Call me old fashioned, I use the spine of my knives. Most of mine have been stripped and squared just for that purpose. All my knives have complimentary firesteels with them, and a few I bounce around just for fun. I been using, flint, for a striker lately, a friend of mine bought a bunch from Ragnars and its coming in handy.

Jute for tinder, thats a new one. Great tip, have to try that out.
I do prefer the goinggear mischmetal rods over the regular ferrorods.
