FIRE vs KNIFE

you are stuck in the middle of a jungle, which one would you rather have? A knife or some type of fire starter that would last you for a while?

personally i go with knife, because a knife just makes me feel so much safer, and there's a lot of things you can do with a knife, including making fire drills.

Fire, so I could burn down the menacing jungle surrounding me.

Just kidding.

If I had to make the choice, and I can't forsee the scenario where I wouldn't have a firestarter with my knife, I'd take the knife. I always have some sort of firesteel in my sheathes, but I guess if I lost the sheath.....

I would go with a good knife too. I mean while you can make both fire and knife from nature, fire is fire while a good steel knife is so much better than a flint napped knife.

Is this assuming that the person has absolutely no fire starting ability without the starter? If I couldn't start the fire without the starter than absolutely the starter, I like my knife but It only cuts things, Id rather live than have some nicely chopped tomatoes.

A knife of course, because with a knife you can make the tools you need to start a fire.

Of course you can make a knife with fire, but it's a little harder.

I don't know anything about jungle survival, but it seems to me that fire probably isn't going to be a huge immediate necessity in that setting, so I'd go with the knife. As suggested, I could then make a bow and drill for fire if I wanted to cook something or boil water (assuming I had something to boil it in).

Now, if the scenario were changed to put me on the side of a mountain with below freezing temperatures or something like that, then my choice, if I actually could choose, may change.

There is an old Norwegian saying, "A knifeless man is a lifeless man."

I`ve heard alot of different versions of the saying, but my favourite version would be:
"I`d rather be lifeless than knifeless."
So, as such, i`d pick a knife over a firestarter every day.
(But i wouldn`t say no to a LMF Army Firesteel either.)

I agree with Salamandar42.
Hot jungle = knife. Canadian Winter = Fire.

In Finnish winter, I'll still take the knife any time rather than just the fire. In fact, I'll take the knife in any winter and any weather. :)

For a more balanced outlook you might ask the same question on fireforums.com also. :D Marcus

With a knife you can also cut open your Taun-Taun and crawl inside its body to keep warm. :D

Jack London's - Yukon man had a sheath knife - but what he really wanted was a fire!!!
