Fire with a Tomahawk only-Try it!

Try this out…

Using only a tomahawk for making all necessary fire preparation from tinder to fuel.

Splitting wood for fuel and chopping is usually where people stop when using a chopping tool. Try going beyond it and using the tool for producing kindling and dry tinder.

Sticking the hawk into a log I was able to use a small dry stick to scrape thin fuzzies into a pile for tinder. The hawk (or hatchet) needs to be sharp for producing thin shavings.

Draw the stick back at the right angle

Using a firesteel, light the pile!

This is where a Tomahawk shines. Being able to take the head off for fine work

Thanks for the reminder to sharpen my Frontier. It's probably too dull to cut a wet fart.
 
Great challenge. Really teaches you to be creative. Definitely going on my challenge list. :thumbup:
 
That fire steel has seen some use !!! Great post. What kind of hawk is that ? I like the flat top. Who makes it ?

I asked the same thing and got no reply, but surfing around I am 99% sure it is a CS Frontier Hawk that has been customized.
 
I don't think so but maybe. Hopefully he will get back to us. The eye looks much different & the beard is much longer.

Sure you are not thinking about the Trail Hawk? It has a shorter beard, and kinda like skirts around the bottom of the eye.
 
I have a Trail Hawk, Spike Hawk, Trench Hawk, hatchet & double bit axe. Its not any of those. That looks custom to me, but i am not very knowledgeable with hawks & axes. Hopefully bearthedog will get back to us.
 
Yup, thats a CS Frontier hawk. I have one as well as the Trail hawk. I like the Frontier a fair amount better but both have their +/-.

This thread reminds me that I need a new handle.
 
I have done this several times in different ways. I have been carrying a tomahawk in the truck for two days now with plans of doing it again due to your inspirational thread. I've thought about fire steel fires and bow drill fires using only a hawk, BUT it's just too damned hot for me to even want to start a fire right now and so dry I'm really afraid to. If I somehow manage to get bored...haven't been bored once in the last five years...I may hose down the woods out back one night and set up some lights :D
 
Don't have a tomahawk and I'm not a great fan (albeit I use one occasionally) of the axe. But this is a great exercise. I still feel better with a sack and a 5" knife....But this kind of thing is great to do!
 
Can I cry foul since you used a fire steel and not just a hawk. Just kidding, thanks for posting.

Thanks for the answer !!! I really like the mods to that Frontier Hawk. Future project, i think i found.
