Fire with magnifying glass...How much magnification?

Has anybody ever tried the reenactor type tinder tins with the lens in the box lid?

How did they do?

That's what I have. I got mine in iron instead of brass just cause I liked it better and saved me a couple bucks. Here's a pic or two.

I was worried about the cap over the lens coming off but when I got it I realised it's well fitted so I don't have to worry about that.

Does it work?

Mine is german silver that looks like echo4v's- well. mine is quite a bit more beat up- it works really good.

My eye glasses have always worked really well for fire starting---and I always have them with me. I 'work' newsprint edges between my fingers for a bit to 'fluff' it and it will then catch fire PDQ.

I've wanted a Hudson Bay Tinderbox for quite a while now, pretty much since I first saw one on Jas. Townsends table back when he was still coming down to the Alafia River Rendezvous. Don't know why I've waited so long.

I'll wait no longer :) Mine has to be copper though.

Man that is a great looking bag.

Thanks, I got that from Magnussen. Pictures do it no justice. It is absolutely amazing.
I have to get out and use it more and take more pics.
I simply can't say enough about Rick's work.

Heh nobody probably cares since this thread is 6 years old but as a kid burning bugs with magnifying glasses was practically a hobby for me so I have a lot of experience with them:

One thing you need to know, if you are unable to make the beam of light turn a hot red at its peak then your magnifying glass sucks. Thats all. Larger ones are always better but the magnification DOES matter. It's difficult to find good quality magnifying glasses today that can reach the red beam I mentioned above. The vintage ones are amazing.

Great Zombie Thread to resurrect, lol. Sometimes you have to risk it for the biscuit.

You'll like this YouTube link I saw recently where the guy starts several embers almost instantly with the SAK magnifying glass.
