As the sun had made a brief appearance today I decided I'd try and get a fire going using the magnifying glass on my SAK ~

As soon as I'd taken this pic~

This happened !:(

Deciding I didn't want to waster the tinder I'd prepped, my ferro-rod would have to be used. After a few strikes my Tinder fungus was smouldering ~

I added some Old mans beard ~

I then added some fine Cedar bark shaving that I'd made using the fish de-scaler on my SAK, this worked awesome ~

I added a little resin and more Cedar bark, it blew into flame instantly !

I'd not taken my Breeden Woody today but instead had travelled a little lighter and had my Breeden Bugaboo ~

Shown here next to my SAK for a size guide ~

Edited to add that after I'd made fire using my ferro-rod the sun came out briefly aagain, I quickly tried the magnifier again and this time got the tinder fungus smoking straight away. I then made the mistake of stopping and getting my camera out to take a pic of it smoking with the magnifier and yeah you guessed it.....the sun vanished again !!!

Hi Pit, great post and very cool pictures.
Any idea on performance of the SAK magnifying glass Vs a Fresnel lens?
I personally do not own a SAK with magnifying glass, and even though I have a couple of Fresnel lenses have never attempted to make fire with them.
I am asking because if there is something abundant around here is the sun, well when it is not pouring.
Thanks + Regards

Ive never tried a Fresnel lense buddy, I do keep threatening to get one for my PSK though. Once I do I'll post my results !

Great stuff as always man!Good idea on the use of the fish scaler,I'd never have thought of that.

Good pics as usual Pit. I have had a couple of successful fires from a fresnel lense, but it was a nice bright and sunny summers day then they happened.

I have never managed even smoke with my SAK lens. On same days a normal lens is like a laser beam,so I think the small size of the SAK lens hampers it a lot. Still useful for finding slivers and what not.

Although a larger lens is more powerful a smaller one WILL work if it is held at the correct angle & distance from the tinder.

Try it with some char cloth.

I've had great success with the tinder fungus/SAK magnifier before, I found it worked better than using char cloth but YMMV !
