Firearm and knife carry question

That's a nice holster. What kind is it?

ttgunleather reinforced IWB with shark trim. 6 month lead time but well worth the wait imo.

I have a real strange situation that I was hoping you guys could help me out with.

I am interested in getting my CCW soon and am going to look into getting a smaller semi-auto with a high-cap magazine or a snub-nose revolver. There's nothing too strange about that, but this topic of discussion as to where to put the gun and the knife has me wanting your advice.

I am right-handed, but left-eye dominant. My dad figured this out when teaching me to shoot bows and BB guns as a kid. I have to shoot as a lefty even though I'm a righty. I use knives with my right hand and guns left handed.

Now I know that I can keep my knife on my right at 3 o'clock, 10 - 11 for a cross-draw or 4-5 for a slightly behind carry.

My problem comes with concealing my gun. If I keep the gun at 9 o'clock, it would be lined up perfectly for an attacker to grab with his dominant hand while I protect it with my weak hand. I am scared they'd be able to get it away from me. I would have my right hand free to grab a blade, though.

Would it be better to get a smaller one and carry it IWB at 6 in the small of my back? I am 6'1" 185 lbs to give you an idea of my body type. I could fit a gun back there easily.

i've never been a fan of 6 o'clock carry because its too easy to get pinned against a wall or the ground and not be able to access your gun. plus its like having a 2 pound slab of metal directly on your spine, if you take a fall and land square on your back you are risking paralysis.

my wife is right handed and left eye dominant, with handguns it is very easy to learn how to shoot right handed and look out of your left eye. you just need to tilt your head a little further to the right so your left eye is lined up with the sights. with a rifle you are pretty much limited to shooting left handed or train your right eye to be dominant, which is not always possible and takes time in the best case scenario.

I dont want anything near my pistol but it. Seen alot of guys in country with a libary with of stuff all around there pistol. When I draw my pistol I dont want anything in the way. Period

I would have to carry a gun in a 8-9 position or keep it in a maxpedition-style shoulder bag. That's another possibility, keep it in a side-carry messenger bag that I keep hanging on the right side or keep it in a shoulder holster that I keep on my right side. Most people won't think I'm going for a gun if I don't use my right hand......most people assume the right hand is the one to look out for. This way would also to allow me to put a knife wherever I please.

The one thing that concerns me, though, is if I was in a scenario where I had to use a gun it would feel much more natural using my left hand but the vision thing might mess me up. I know I can learn to shoot right handed, but I think that my accuracy would be higher if I shot left-handed because of my eyesight....I wear contacts/glasses and my left eye has better vision and when I use my hand as a handgun and try to do it both ways it just looks more natural to me using my left eye to aim. I am sure if I was under stress or shock I would revert to what comes natural to me, which is the left eye.

Also, I think I might be able to get some sort of tactical advantage by having a weak-hand gun and strong-hand knife. I could conceivably have a knife in my right hand while shooting with my left, even if it is hanging from my wrist a bit via a paracord lanyard. It might be a good idea to focus some of my weight lifting (just started again, am 31 yrs old, 6'1" 185lbs) on grip and forearm strength with my left arm. If spending 20 minutes a week doing extra reps in the gym to try to make my left hand stronger and it ends up saving my life it will be time well spent. If I am never in that position, at least I will be stronger!

I'm in the same situation as you. We are both "Cross Eye" dominant. My left eye is dominant and I grew up shooting with my right eye. Most sports that require hitting I do left handed but I write with my right hand. I'm totally screwed up with my lefts and rights.

I am in Law Enforcement and have had to make a few hard choices when it comes to shooting my duty firearm. I'm a plain clothes investigator and choose to carry concealed with an inside the pants Galco holster at what you would describe at the 4-5 O'Clock position with my spare mag and handcuff at my 10 or 11 O'Clock.

I have tried training myself to shoot with my left eye but always finding myself reverting back to my right eye under stress. For about the past 6 months, I've been shooting both eyes open and noticed a huge improvement in my score and speed from the holster to rounds on target. Most deadly force encounters are going to take place at close range. And from about the 1 to 7 yard mark you are mostly point shooting. Failure drills at the 7 probably require good sight alignment sight picture but from the 5 and up it really just point shooting for me.

I tend to revert back to one eye shooting from about the 10 yard back. I hope to be a two eyes open shooter at some point from any range.

If you are having trouble deciding how to conceal, you might want to give the ankle holster a shot. Galco also makes a great ankle holster. The only drawback is when you wear shorts you have to go back inside the pants.

(I'm not trying to sell Galco. It's just been to most comfortable that I've found and it department approved)

Hopefully this will give you some ideas and I didn't want to stray to far off of the knife topic but I am still trying to decide where to put my ESEE 3. I think I will just end up putting it on my TAC vest and stick to a folder in my front left pocket.

Good luck!
