I have a beretta utility drop hunter and a browning big game knife and a walther p38 knife . And i am looking to get some from other gun makers . So what i am asking is what do you think of knives for gun makers in general ?

Microtech makes knives, but then they went into guns and they made a version of the Steyr AUG. It's vice versa of what you said, but I think it counts!

Much like the knives that gun companies make, Microtech's AUG clones were terrible.

In general, gun company knives are awful.

Beretta and HK are definite exceptions, as is Remington (to some extent). Wilson Combat has some knives made by Les George and Chris Reeve, as well as Hogue. I think Emerson has made some knives for some smaller manufacturers too.

Glock is one of the only companies that makes both, instead of just licensing their name to companies like Taylor cutlery.

Thats good to know as i would of thought colt and s&w would have been two of the better ones . What is wrong with them ?

They are made by Taylor Brands. Cheap Chinese Crap.

HK is nice American and Chinese stuff made and sold by Benchmade.

The Remington F.A.S.T folder doesn't have much for the "knife-Knut", but I can say first hand that it takes abuse like a champ.

Firearms companies don't manufacture knives. They license their names out to other companies to use.

Most are cheap Chinese crap (S&W, Winchester, colt)

Some are half decent (HK, Sig, Glock)

Only one is actually good (Wilson Combat)

Owners of the beretta avenger would dispute this.

Dispute what?

I have never handled the Avenger so it might be a good one, I don't know. I doubt they are as nice as the Wilson knives though.

I'm pretty sure Beretta didn't make them since they were made in Japan...

It is fortunate for the gun companies that the average customer doesn't know that much about knives. S&W, Colt, Winchester make very good firearms but the knives with their names on them are not nearly up to this standard. As a manufacturer it would embarrass me to put my name on products that were not up to the standards of products that I actually do manufacture.

Sorry i am getting a bit confused . Are they licensed to make them to the gun makers spec's or just licensed to uses the name ?

Several of those trademarks for use on knives are owned by Kevin Pipes, Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Winchester is owned by Carolina Knife & Tool. I think taylor owns S&W and many more. Winchester at one time made their own knives as did Remington. Camillus made some very nice high quality knives for the owner of the Remington trademark. Most of the trademark owners occasionally have a higher quality knife made in their firearm company brandings. You just have to know what to look for.

They own licenses to use the trademarks on cutlery. The designs are entirely up to the licensees. In fact you might see the exact same knives from one of them in multiple brandings.

"Licensed" may not be the best word. I believe gun maker X figures their name will sell knives to fans of their guns who dont know much about knives. Gun maker X hires lowest bidder mystery knife factory Y slap their names on some knives they make. Gun maker X sells them. Or some variant of that.

I do hear some "gun" knives are decent for bashing stuff with.

^ this 100%

Colt and S/W at one time put out nice knives. For instance Barry Wood made knives for Colt, and Smith and Wesson had knives made in their other plant in Bangor, Me during the 70's. They also had Keith Kilby, ABS MS make a custom knife in the late 90's for offer through one of their branches.

Ithaca had Ithaca/Track which offered nice stuff.

Sig offers a few nice knives.

Walther had a few decent Japanese knives in the 90's.

Ruger has Case make a few. Paragon made an auto for them too, in the early 2000's.

Savage offered a few neat knives recently.

Iver Johnson offered a few very decent knives during the first 1/2 of the 20th century.

Then there are the very rare high end knives offered by the British firearm companies.

In truth, most of the big firearm companies(and some holster companies) offer or offered knives at one point. But you have to know what you're looking at, as Codger mentioned.
