Firearms at the convention?

I'm interested in everybody's suggestions, too.

Before innocently stumbling across the cantina, I didn't even have a good kitchen knife. I still don't, but now I have a few khukuris, and I do carry a Spyderco Native everyday.

Mostly thanks to this forum, I just took a handgun safety course where I learned the fundamentals and got to do some target practice using a Glock 9mm.

Really enjoyed it, but I think I might like a revolver better for my first gun. For CCW (only need to sign your name here in Pensy), I'm thinking of getting a Kel-Tec 32. The Ruger sounds good. How about Dan Wesson guns?

Remember when I asked about which gun to get for CCW? I tried the search, but all the subjects I tried drew a blank, no pun
intended.:(
There was tons of good information on that thread!!!!
Perhaps Berk or Cougar or another one of the Guru Search Experts can find it.
I believe it would be really helpful in the hand gun discussion.:)

I can't find anything so it's up to our HI Research Librarian. Or anybody better at finding stuff than me.

Thanks Tulsa,

The Redhawk I had was a double action stainless steel .44 magnum - I forget barrel length - around 7" - barrel not heavy - no "underlug" or whatever they call that thing under the Python barrel. Sounds like non-super.

The Blackhawk was single action blued .44 mag, "longish" barrel, "western" style. I believe the Blackhawk "super" at the time just differentiated it from the alternate chamberings but I'm real fuzzy on this.

Not much use for a rifle where I live - only rich people can afford "deer leases" and I ran out of patience early on for benchrest.

The handgun crowd just seems to have more "stuff" to do and there's a pile of local ranges, as I'm learning. The handgun would just get more use at this point.

Hope this helps narrow it down.
See ya soon.
Hawk

See you there, Hawk. With all the knives and guns that'll be in Catoosa I hope we don't scare the neighbors or generate a visit by the local cops.

Yvsa is right. We had a big long discussion about this before. I did a quick couple of searchs and didn't hit anything either.

Buoy,
I think you are quite right to prefer a revolver for a first gun, especially for CCW. I love my Glock but I would be uncomfortable recommending it to someone who wasn't experienced. I wouldn't buy a Dan Wesson for CCW. They are mostly hunting and range guns nowdays. It would be hard to beat the one Yvsa settled on: S&W 640 .357 Mag. It's smallish but in a solid caliber. The Centennial style frame means there is no hammer to snag on your clothes during a draw or to wear holes in your clothes either. Comfortable grips although a little thick. Probably work better for concealment with something a little slimmer and slicker (rubber sticks to clothes). And don't be put off by the thought of a .357 Magnum out of a snubbie. It's nice to know you have the gun strength and the ability to grow into the bigger caliber. In the meantime you can just load it with .38 Specials. No need to worry about whether or not you can use +P in this gun. The NYC snub load is hard to beat. Federal Nyclad 158 gr. HP +P.

Hawk,

Sounds like you did have a regular Redhawk. Good solid gun. The Blackhawk though sounds different. You can get a regular Blackhawk in .44 Magnum nowdays but back when you are talking about, it was Super Blackhawk only. It would have had a 7.5 inch barrel and kind of a "hook" at the rear of the trigger guard. (OK, purists, there were Ruger .44 Mags before the Super but those were the discontinued flat tops. I doubt he had one of those unless we are talking a really long time ago!)

re: rifles. Well, I do hunt deer and usually I do use a rifle (although that Super Redhawk is sweet from a stand). But that isn't why I own rifles. Normally I only use one or two rifles to hunt deer; how do you explain the several dozen more? I don't shoot benchrest either although I do shoot rifles off a bench when I'm testing a new reload. So why do I like them?

Well, there is the obvious utility around my property. A coyote seen around my place is likely to be far out of handgun range, even for an accomplished shot. So I do have a "use" for several of them that could be defined as "utility." But mainly they are just fun to shoot in the same way you are saying you like to shoot handguns. Have you ever fired an AR-15? Mabye you have to be US Army prior service to really love them I guess but they are fun little guns to shoot. The original 5.56 (.223) is cheap and can do the job most of the time. Right now you can buy 300 rounds of 5.56 for $39.00 from aimsurplus.com (and lots of other places). There is literally tons and tons of surplus ammunition for rifles for sale out there. I bought 760 rounds of 7.62 NATO (.308) for $105 delivered. South African battle packs are 140 rounds and they are running $19.95. So you take a military caliber rifle to the range and fire it at targets 100 yards away in much the same way you are saying you like to shoot handguns. Slap in a 20 round magazine and have fun! And FAL mags are cheap. Lots of 20 rounders out there for $5. The actual rifle will run you between $500 and $1100 (with the $1100 rifle being a largely custom job). The really nice AR-15 I just bought was $660 delivered.

I'm not really trying to change your mind here. I'm just pointing out that the really, really good deals right now are on the rifle side.

Bill,

You said what I was thinking last night. Are we going to be well screened from neighbors? All these guys walking around with guns and 30" long knives are going to get somebody worried!! You could get away with it around my house since I _don't have any_ neighbors but I don't know what Yvsa's situation is like.

Yvsa has neighbors on R&L and across the street but his back yard is fairly private and borders the Ok jungle. I think we may be okay if we keep everything outback but Bro is the final authority on all these matters.

Tulsa,

I hadn't thought of checking the Ruger site before your comments (not too swift on my part). There's a full line where I didn't remember one. Another surprise you pointed out is that prices seem to have languished for 20 years, or at least haven't gone up much. That heavier Redhawk does look nice and sure won't give me a stovepipe jam - the DE is starting to look shaky. Your knowledge of firearms history is amazing - I don't even know what a "flattop" is - my Blackhawk had the transfer bar ignition if that id's it. The SA transfer bar was still new enough they were still advertising it as "new". No fluts in the cylinder, iirc. Hawgleg grip was so tiny, the end of my pinky finger once wound up curled up under the bottom of the grip, got between my palm and the grip - the first shot must've numbed it - I showed up at work the next day with what looked like a crab apple growing where my pinky should have been.

I'll admit to an AR15 providing a major league fun factor - there used to be a bullpup semi whose name escapes me that was interesting - kinda like an IMI Tavor - chambered for 5.56 with a "curved" magazine designed to wrap around one's forearm. Never saw one outside an old gun mag but it sure stuck in my memory.

In addition to an apparant lack of open spaces where I live, I'll confess to having gotten tangled up in other hobbies while away from firearms. In addition to Uncle, there's the Spyderco collector's club, RC hydros and high power model rocketry. Someday, my priorities will snap back in order. Meanwhile, the handgun only is a limit.

Note to Yvsa: Don't worry, your neighbors will be stressed enough without me pulling in with what appears to be a full size AIM-9M Sidewinder missile - we'll leave 'em at home.

Any reason to haul along a box of Spydie's? They don't look too impressive next to the YCS.

More confused than ever, but learnin' and lovin' it, I remain,
Hawk

Take a look at Freedom Arms. They produce some of the best single action revolvers I have ever handled. Machining and finish is top notch out of the box. Very pricy at about $1500+ per copy, but you are only buying one so why not go with the best. Believe me one trigger pull and you will be convinced.

Have fun.

After all the neighbors are used to seeing a bunch of half naked ndns and white folks and in between, actually all colors of people cavorting around in all kinds of weather up to and including a few inches of snow on the ground at 10* with the wind blowing 15 mph.
Then they're used to seeing Barb and me carrying around big curved blades as well as a few others that have came over to check out the collection of khukuris.;)

And as Uncle Bill has said it's pretty private back there, has to be in order to have the Sweatlodge.
There's no telling how many fanatical religious people we would have out here demonstrating when we're doing a Sweat if it weren't fairly private.
We have been very fortunate over the years the Lodge has been up. The fire dept. has only shown up once and that's when Barb put a bunch of half dried honeysuckle on the Fire and it created enough smoke to send smoke signals for a year.:D

For all around fun, modestly high power, and quality, a 4" or 6" N frame in 357, the model 27 ( top of the line ) or 28 ( same except budget model ) older one that's got the pinned barrel and recessed chambers.

With one New York reload*. Exactly the same so one can live at home and one can live in the car or truck.

( * The New York reload, if you haven't heard, says it's quicker to grab another loaded gun than reload the empty one. )

What we don't want is to have people thinking we are a militia group getting ready to take over Oklahoma.

That's the one thing I have liked best about this neighborhood. No one pays much attention, unless someone's shooting out the back door, neighbor kids done that one day until I made them quit, to anything going on. And all of the neighbors are used to seeing a large crowd at our place with a kazillion cars parked in the front
yard.
All the neighbors will just think there's another ndn doin' at our place.:D

And that's something everyone needs to do if we have enough room, please park in the front yard on the grass if your driving your personal vehicle, rental cars not quite as important.
That will insure that no one will get their car totaled in the late night, early morning from some drunk leaveing the bar down at the corner.
That's only happened once in all of our years here and it was across the street, but one never knows. All of our Sweatlodge crowd parks in the front yard.:)

Yvsa and Uncle, Research Librarian has to report that HI Forum Archive 2, which I'm pretty sure is where the CCW thread was, appears to have disappeared. After getting no response to the search terms "Glock", "Yvsa", and "khukuri", I tried to just look at all the posts from the beginning and got nothing. Bad news if true.
BTW, as I explained to Uncle, personal obligations make it impossible for me to make it to Catoosa, but in the event of a last-minute change of plans, how would the neighbors feel if I brought my little 1" bore black powder cannon for a few salutes to freedom?:D

The river isn't that far away where a couple of rounds or so could be popped of in the cause of Freedom!!!!:D:D:D:D
And there's also a multitude of khukuri testing targets there as well.
And I don't imagine that whomever owns the open field behind our house would mind if a few things were cleared, actually they probably wouldn't know. Just don't cut to close to the fence as the brush makes for a good privacy barrier and keeps the yard and street rats from tearing up the drainage system out back as bad.:)

Oh!!! And thanks for looking for the lost thread. The H.I.-2 Archives are gone?!?!?!?
Dayum!!!!!!!!!:(:(:(:(

The no. 2 archives may be gone from Bladeforums but somebody copied them to disc so they are alive and well somewhere. Maybe Rusty knows where they are.

And, Berk, if there's any way -- even a flight in the Am and back at night -- give it your best shot. I'd sure like to meet you in person before we get to heaven and time's running out here.

The answer as to who has a copy of the HI archive #2 undoubtedly has to be on file...

where else but in the stuff that is missing.
