I am thinking of getting a firebowl for the backyard. I thought it would be fun for my daughter and I to practice our firecraft...and a good excuse to use some of these Busse knives that are laying about.

So, any recommendations from you folk? I don't care about fancy looking tile borders, hand-hammered copper bowls, and all that; just what is functional and useful.

Get an old Weber style grill and bury the top of it. Or cut a 55gal drum and bury that. Lots of scraps would make a pit.

I agree with the rocks. If you live in suburbia - I made a fire ring out of landscaping blocks that stacked well enough for me to make a fire reflector in the back and a ring (that I mostly buried) around the edge. It looked good enough that the (stupid) homeowners association had no clue what it was and I was able to have a fire now and again.

My wifes uncle (Back in Ohio) had a fire platform. He took some extra bricks and layed them out in a large square in his side yard, and would just light a fire on that, and we'd sit around it. Very easy to do if you've got some spare bricks laying around, or rocks, or bury a webber or 55 gal drum like others have suggested. Go garage saleing, I bet you'll find something suitable.

Cool idea.

My folks have one of the rounded copper ones with a mesh that creates a dome over it to catch sparks and keep wind-blown objects out. It looks very nice, but doesn't allow a fire quite large enough for my tastes. I have no idea what they paid for it.
