Firefox Risks / Downside ??

SPX, what made you choose Chrome? I haven't tried it yet so I'm curious to hear of it's advantages.

I played with Chrome for a bit, not a bad browser once you get used to the way it works. Unfortunately it doesn't have the extensions that I regularly use in FF so I haven't swapped yet.

Faster, easier UI, multiple ways of storing bookmarks and managing them, Incognito Mode (NO trace of the site logged to your computer - ideal for banking, etc,) tabs that act as a separate linked page, and being able to drag and drop of tabs for starters. There's more goodies once you get into it.

gaj, here's a screenshot of Chrome. All of the site names you see under the address bar will open in a new window. That area is called the Bookmarks Bar. The >> you see to the right shows additional sites I have stored there for quick access. Off to the right of that you can see Other Bookmarks. That's where you store them like you would with IE. But you can edit them. So far, I haven't found anything Chrome can't do better than IE did. Except for those annoying few sites that only like IE.

Another neat trick is that the address bar works just like a google bar. As you type, suggestions come up underneath. Very slick and convenient.

No no, my complaint with Chrome, if you can call it a complaint, is that it doesn't have FF extensions like adblock and mail notify and that sort of thing. Well, it didn't last time I played with it.

Other than that, it's a good browser.

I'll probably stick with FF for a while anyway, it does pretty much everything I want, I've rarely had problems with it and, well, I'm used to it, kind of like a good pair of old boots. :)

Chrome, while it's a good browser, isn't so much better that it makes me want to move.

Understood. Kaspersky takes care of adblock issues and Thunderbird has a very nice mail notify ghost image.

Of the three, FF was a close second, and both it and Chrome were far better than IE.

Chrome is shockingly bad at handling RSS feeds, and doesn't allow AdBlock Plus - but saving that it's a good browser. My default is still FF3.

Internet Exploder is one of the worst web browsers ever made. It's a so bad that even attempts to get as many people as possible to use Microsoft proprietary technology by making web pages unusable to people using anything BUT Internet Explorer (The "This webpage best viewed in Internet Explorer" sites that wouldn't load in any other browser, etc.) failed miserably.

IMO, it's full of security holes, it's a slow program, and there are much better ones out there. It's MORE risky to use than Firefox.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And what comes to other security programs: anti-virus, firewall etc. there is really no point in using commercial programs that cost you actual money. Most of them don't really offer that much more protection than other free ones. And commercial products like Norton, Norman and F-Secure are often so bulky that they take a whole lot of your system recources, thus unnecessarily slowing down your computer.

I've ALWAYS through my computing days used free products and I've had NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER. My current line up is:

Firewall: Comodo Firewall (many other good free options too)
Anti-Virus: Avira AntiVir Personal (another really good one is AVG Anti-Virus)
Spyware and such: Ad-Aware Free Edition & Spybot Search&Destroy
Browser: Firefox (another good alternative is Opera)

I run Linux behind a firewall while using Opera as a browser. It just doesn't get more secure than that.

I've tried just about all of the browsers except Chrome. I like Firefix 3 the best. It's customizable enough for me to make it do what I want. The fastest I've used yet (after doing a few of the recommended "hacks"). And so far its been secure, and stable.

After using FF for years, I haven't found any downsides.

ConsumerSearch.com claims to be reviewing the reviews - ie: survey all the reviews ranks them and tries to come to some concensus.

Web Browsers at ConsumerSearch

" Firefox remains the most-recommended web browser for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux users. Reviews say Firefox 3 and (and its 3.1 beta) are even better, using less memory than earlier versions "

I acknowledge that, and do have FireFox 3 -
but despite that I still use IE7 -
there are certain things that FireFox just doesn't do well.
eg:
(1) IE7 can save web pages in the single .mht format.
(2) using realPlayer video download - takes no extra time when the video player buffer/cache is full in IE7 - but FireFox treats it as a separate download - so while the video is playing the download takes TWICE as long - pretty DUMB (IMHO)
EDIT to ADD -
(3) I use PicasaWeb for displaying my photos - for IE there is a bulk uploader which is convenient - whereas FireFox there is only the basic uploader.

However there are some web pages that IE7 will not save (don't know why) while FF3 has no problems at all......

So both have their problems -
IE7 is well exposed and notorious -
while FF3 tends to be praised...
but I use IE7, and only FF3 as backup when IE7 fails - which is not often, maybe once a week?
