My father's birthday is coming up and I'm going to get him a new knife because he is always using horrible knives and razor blades that break and are of little to no use to him. I can't belive this guy sometimes, I walked in the house today and i saw a tiny 2" gerber next to his keys and when i asked him what he had that thing for he was like...."thats my new work knife mark gave me". I wanted to choke the man, I need to get him a solid knife.

What I'm looking for is

- Fully Serrated Edge
- A lightweight, strong handle material (E.G. FRN)
- Blade tip that can puncture objects
- Folding Knife with strong Lock
- rust resistant
- pocket clip

We live in Florida, this thing will be wet and used often. I really want to find him one that he can carry daily, something that will always go with him in the addition to having with him at work.

I am really thinking of getting him a black FRN Salt 1or a Pacific Salt but I guess I'm open to all suggestions.

I've got a pac salt in plain edge and I love it. I would say that it would be a great choice for your dad. Is he a fireman? If so and this is his work knife, perhaps the yellow handle would be better, and should look good with his turnout gear to boot.

he specifically said a while ago that he wanted a black knife so thats the ONLY reason I wasnt thinking yellow. I had the same thoughts as you, I think it would look sweet with the gear. He's the chief though, so he rarely wears the gear, he usually just oversees things.

gotcha, I was thinking the pacific salt because the extra length would be helpful on scene, but if he's the chief I think that either the pac salt or salt 1 (I have both but in PE) would work well, I would base the choice off of the size of knives he likes to use.

i would kill to see some size comparisons if you have the time or chance to do so. I'm not sure how large I want to go considering I'm hoping he will EDC this bad boy. I mean, If he can carry around a second hand gerber the size of my pinky than I'm thinking he's going to flip at a 3" blade.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but maybe you should consider it.

Are you sure he wants a knife with a sharp point? almost all firefighters and other EMT's i work with use a sheep foot or a rescue hook. (I just carry my normal spyderco delica or benchmade mini-grip and a BM #8 rescue hook)

My dad is also a fire chief, last year I got him a CQC-13 he liked it because of the wave but said it was a bit big in the pocket. He also about destroyed this knife, broke the tip, dulled it to butter knife status everyday and the lock is about due for service. This year it was a ZDP endura plain edge, I've only needed to give it touch-up once and he has made a few comments on how well it cuts. Note: not a factory edge.

Lesson learned, don't buy an expensive knife with good steel and cool features. Get a cheap one with super steel that can handle the all the crazy things he uses his knife for. My dad thinks of a knife as a tool and uses it for everything with no regard. If your pops isn't that ruff on a blade though I would go with something in H1.

The salt series folders have a modified wharncliffe type point. Not as acute as the normal spydies, but still has some penetrative ability. I love it. The other option might be the mini grip version of the benchmade 550. Also has a somewhat less "pointy" point.

Here you go. This is not my picture, but it shows what you want. Salt 1 (which I have, awesome knife) and a Pacific Salt.

Have you considered the Victorinox RescueKnife? Compact, solid, three separate blades (windshield, side window, seatbelt cutter) centre punch, etc. It's remarkably small for such a versatile tool. Won knife of the year two years ago I think. I'm a paramedic and have used it more times than I can count. Drawbacks....it's fire-engine yellow, and no pocket clip. Nonetheless, it has a sheath and it's always on my person along with my EDC 550. Food for thought.

I say get him a Severtech. Not serrated but Send Gerberblades a PM and he can hook you up.

Thanks for the suggestions all, it means a lot to me :) However, If it doesn't fit the criteria than I can't honestly see myself buying it due to the fact that these are the specifications he wants.

Thanks for the picture BenchmadeBoy, that Pacific is much larger than I thought, either that than the Salt 1 is smaller than I thought, not sure exactly what yet.

I'm not sure exactly what type of blade he wants. He doesn't know the blade profiles or anything, all i know is that when I showed him a couple spyderco's he did not like any of the flat nosed models and he specifically said he wanted a blade that could "puncture objects"

You sure this doesn't strike his fancy?

It is a switchblade, but that shouldn't pose any legal problems because he's a Firefighter.

How about a SOG trident with partial serrations and a tanto tip? (I am pretty sure SOG makes one like that), kershaw RAM 1910 may also be a good choice.
