I am a professional firefighter in Jersey, Channel Islands, British Isles.
We are issued a Leatherman Wave, which is carried in its pouch on the uniform belt.
As this tool is difficult to get to when wearing fire gear, SCBA, a harness etc, and difficult to use when wearing firefighting gloves, many guys have bought their own knives which they have been carrying in their fire jacket.
The vast majority are good knives (as the firefighters know I have an interest in knives and came to me for advice ) : Spyderco Enduras, Delicas, Salt I, Pacific Salts and Benchmade Mini Grips and Grips. However, there have been occasions when the guys have forgotten to remove their knife before their dirty kit gets sent to the launderers who are contracted to clean our kit.
They have made a complaint about knives found in fire kit and the result is that the muppets in mangement (who all joined at the "bottom" as firefighters and probably used to carry a knife too

) have ruled that the only tool permitted to be carried is the Wave. Anyone found carrying a different multi tool or knife faces disciplinary action. One watch was even told to turn out the pockets of their fire kit on a change-over parade.
The whole issue really grips my sh1t. I have raised my concerns officially and recommended that, if we are not allowed to carry a personally bought knife, the Service should issue an appropriate knife to be carried in the fire jacket. All fours operational watches supported my recommendation, but it has been dismissed by the "Equipment Procurement Group".
They have decided that:
1. If a knife was to be issued it would be instead of the Wave, not in addition to it. ..I don't consider this to satisfactory, because a knife/multi tool is needed just as much when we are not in fire gear.
2. At present there isn't money in the budget to pay for an issued knife. ..When we were willing to spend £30 of our own money on a knife in the first place!!
I am going to pursue this to the bitter end, but I suspect that the best I will be able to achieve is a Mora 860F on each truck.
In addition to the Wave, I am still carrying a folder in a pouch on my uniform belt and another in my firejacket, along with a Rescue Hook, but if certain managers knew that I was carrying them I would end up on a charge.
