Fireproof sheaths???

Arizona,

I used to be a volunteer firefighter. Some of our most experienced guys would slip a non-folding spanner wrench into a turnout coat pocket. The small prybar idea would be similar.

Where would you carry the sheath? Would you want it under your coat? Would it be practical on airpack web gear?

I think whatever kind of sheath you end up with should provide full coverage for protection from loss. I am partial to a flap style leather sheath. I don't think it will be that much of a problem but if you are concerned about the sheath burning, maybe it could be covered with Nomex or something. I am a hobby leathercrafter, if you have ideas you want to bounce off sombody email me.

TAutry,
a non-folding spanner is what I carry now. In a pinch it's better than nothing. As far as the sheath goes, I haven't decided yet. I'm still working on the design of the overall knife and depending on what I end up with, especially in terms of size, options will limit themselves. Attaching it to the SCBA harness is an idea, even upside down or horizontally across the front, but if the size gets out of hand, then that would probably hinder movement. Hanging from the side is probably always an option and a flap style leather sheath is a good idea to protect from loss. I talked to another forumite who can sow nomex/kevlar, so having a sheath covered to protect it is a viable option.
When the knife/tool (I think I need to come up with a name for it

)is finished, I'll have a better idea what kind of sheathing solution will be best.

might be a stupid idea, so correct if i'm wrong...
how's about a.25" thick talonite blade?
what i know is that talonite will not loose his temper, handle is titanium... for the sheath, well i have no idea...

Hallihallo!

Aha, man spricht deutsch hier, sehr nett.

Anyway, what you're looking for might already exist. Take a very close look at those here http://www.missionknives.com/products/mpk.html

They meet many of your requirements
1. fireproof handle and sheath (Kevlar/Hytrel)
2. prybar ability
3. no temper to loose if too hot

The only problem could be the webbing retention strap (or the rubber ring, depending on which one you use). If you can replace these, your dream knife might already exist.

Ansonsten: Frohe Weihnachten,
Ralf

Hey, Arizona. Have you considered a Carson U2/Buck Intrepid? Tanto blade or blunt tip, serrations, chopping section and thick blade. Also, the handle slabs come off, paracord wrap goes on, fits those NFPA approved gloves. The sheath is a little trickier. Also, the knife comes in two lengths.

A possible carrying method or two, if I may?
-Attach to the bunker pants suspenders, so the knife is handle down just above the hem of the coat.
-Bunker pants pockets?

I am currently going thru the Fire Academy, don't know if any of these ideas will work in Old Man Fire's Playground.

Later, Jeff B
