Anyone know of a good way to make a firespit, preferrably out of wood, that will not burn or catch on fire before the food is fully cooked? Thanks for any advice guys.

Use green wood and keep it up high enough that you'll still get the heat you need to cook it, but the fire doesn't actually touch the wood, if possible. I think.:D

Use green hardwood like oak, hickory or maple and you will be fine. The main thing is to stay away from softwoods with lots of sap, some could even be toxic. Also adjust what ever you are spitting the right distance from the fire, you don't need to stick your food into the flames to cook it, if your green stick is charring you probably have it to close to the heat.
