Firestarting practice

With bigger blades or ones that feel too clumsy, hold the knife with the blade away from you parallel to the floor and shave the stick by moving that towards you from under the blade, you will find control is much easier.
 
That's a good tip about large blades, it is certainly easier to move the item being cut in some cases.

Great stuff buddy, I always say never take your equipment for granted !

It's also good to try this kinda stuff in real adverse conditions as well, heavy wind, driving rain etc....doing this really lets ya know what works and what ya can trust !

Man I've been frustrated with my lack of skills and poor equipment in the past !!!!!

I haven't tried extreme weather yet, but i've done damp, and i've done breezy. :D Actually on the day of those pics, the BK9 sheath provided a small wind break to keep my tinder from blowing off.

I think finding and preparing natural tinder that will take a spark is going to be my next big hurdle. I'll probably be out tommorow looking like a pyromaniac trying to light bits of anything fuzzy. :rolleyes:
