Firesteel comparison video - LMF, blank, Blastmatch

I would like to get a few blanks from ferrocerium.com (cheaper than Swedish Fire Steels and a few differente sizes to chose among) but I don't know if they ship worldwide. I sent them an email yesterday but still didn't get an answer. Does any of you know if they can ship them to Spain?
Over here people get fire steels 90% of the time on eBay but they come from UK or even USA so shipping is high. I was planning to buy a bunch of them, that is why I am interested in ferrocerium.com.

To access sources closer to you, try a Google search for "ferrocerium." Light My Fire is a Swedish brand used by the largest manufacturer of made-up ferrocerium fire-starting kits - AKA the Swedish Firesteel.

Here is a link to Old Jimbo on the topic: http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/fs.html

I just am following Thomas advice and trying to find dealers here in Europe... and so far the google search didn't provide much help. Getting the SwedishArmy thick model from RayMears is even more expensive than getting it at eBay.

I fould out about an company from Shangay who sells blanks:

The problem is (besides that I still don't know for how much do they sell them for including shipping... what a crappy webpage!) that you need to buy A LOT OF THEM. If you wander arround you will find out that you might need to get like 1kg of rods (that is a lot of them!)... I might send them an email just to see if they could ship in smaller quantities and what would be the shipping. In the meantime I guess I will start asking at my spanish forum ARMAS BLANCAS if anyone else wants some...

I still hope that the guys at ferrocerium can ship them to Spain (time will tell).

Mikel,

Ferrocerium.com does ship to Europe. I've ordered from them several times, and the owner is a pleasure to deal with. Very nice guy, that doesn't let you down, and bills the actual shipping costs without any extras like handling fee BS.

Mikel,
...Ferrocerium.com does ship to Europe...

Thanks a lot CZ! Now I just need to figure out how much the shipping will be. I guess that the shipping cost depends on the weight... so I just have to figure it out to make the most out of the smallest package! :D. I will drop him another email if I don't get an answer soon.

If it was up to you... what sizes would you order? I was thinking about having one in my RAT-7 sheat pouch, one in my bag (whenever I go out without the previosly mentioned knife) and maybe keep one in a makeshift loop/holder in some other knife sheats. I usually don't carry any on my keyring or anything but maybe I get a few just in case.

Maybe 0,394"x4" for the big ones and 0,25"x2,5" for the small ones? Ferrocerium doesn't carry bigger ones (the Shangai company does... as big as you want it!).

I've contacted jxmetals too, but don't want to do business with them. It's just too hard to get smaller quantities, and you have to pay huge amounts of shipping.

I've ordered the 10x100mm versions and the 8mmx100mm versions. I picked the longest ones, because it's easier to hold, when I have cold hands (probably something you don't have to worry about in sunny Spain). I do have some smaller ones on my keys, but I got these from Evil-Bay.

I would say, get the 10x100mm version. Bigger is better......:D

I will probably go with the bigger ones as well... because if I intend to attach/glue a pice of hardwood to one of the ends and I guess that I will need at least 2cm to fit inside. That will leave 80mm at most exposed, that should be plenty for getting a nice shower of sparks. The rod in the BlastMatch is thicker but I don't know if it is really worth it going that big (and it is shorter by the way).

As for Spain being sunny and warm... mmm well... not everywhere! LOL... I live in the northern coast (1 1/2 hour drive from France) and the weather here is cold (not frezzing if that is what you mean), wet and we don't see the sun much! :D

Thanks for the advice Thomas... I am going them and see if they can help me.

Mikel

PD: I dropped ferroceirum.com another email, I hope to get an answer this time.
